Sony Google TV System Gets Rooted

Root

If you're the owner of a Sony Google TV, model number NSZ-GT1 or any of the current built-in models, and you've been waiting around for a way to root your GTV with a software-only solution, then today is your day. The GTV Hacker blog has devised a method by which you can gain root, no hardware hacking or soldering required.

GTV in its most current form is far more capable a service than when it first launched back in 2010. Honeycomb has arrived, the Android Market is live, but there are still some limitations on the device. Most notably, the content blackout restrictions from some providers (like Hulu) are a constant aggravation for GTV owners. Now, though, your rooted GTV can get around those restrictions with the ability to run unsigned kernels, which remove content restrictions, as well as some other benefits listed below.

  • Modified flash plugin with random per box flash string for Content Provider Bypass.
  • Crippled update feature to prevent box from receiving automatic updates.
  • Completely RW system, cache, and rootfs partitions
  • Full ADB Root
  • Removed signature checks on kernel / init scripts / init binary
  • A few other surprises.
  • BETA: Enable NTFS Support for Sony Google TV devices
With previous root methods, you actually had to get inside the box and do some work on the hardware. For most of us, we cringe at the thought of touching the precious innards of such a pricey piece of kit. Thanks to the folks at GTV Hacker, though, that part of the process has been circumvented, allowing you to gain root through software only methods. Now, that doesn't mean that the process is without its trials. It will still take you some time, as well as 4 USB flashdrives to accomplish. Because of the rather in-depth process it requires, we won't actually run down the guide here. However, if this is something that GTV owners want to take advantage of, you can find the instructions over at GTV Hacker, as well as an explanation of the process. Be sure to head over to the Google TV section of the forums at RootzWiki for all discussion.
