How To Keep Your Mind Healthy After 65 | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Once you hit 60 or 65, you might begin to think of dementia, particularly if you have a close relative who has, or is, suffering from this illness. The dementia group of diseases, affects memory and can eventually make you rely on other people regarding basic needs. Luckily, there are some things you can do to help keep your mind sharp and lower your risk of dementia.

1. What is Alzheimer?s Disease? Alzheimer?s is often afforded its own label as a disease when in truth it should be referred to as dementia of the Alzheimer?s type. It?s the most common form of senile dementia in which amyloid plaques, or fragments associated with protein, cause Alzheimer?s disease when they accumulate among brain cells.

2. Just what is Vascular Dementia? Despite the fact that Vascular dementia can co-exist along with Alzheimers, it differs in that vascular dementia results from the destruction of brain tissue when the blood flow becomes diminished or even blocked, often as a result of several large strokes or many small ones. These strokes usually begin following age 70. Risk factors include hypertension, diabetic issues, abnormal heart rhythms, high levels of fat in the blood and smoking.

3. What is Lewy body disease? Senile dementia of the Lewy type has similarities to Alzheimers and Parkinson?s disease. Having said that, it can be characterized by alpha-synuclein and ubiquitin protein clumps in the nerves of the brain. It is unique from Alzheimer since it?s features often include variances in confusion, lucidity, visual hallucinations and Parkinson like tremors as well as limb rigidity.

4. What are some of the risk aspects for dementia? There are various explanations why some people may be vulnerable to dementia. These include, family history, abnormal quantities of alcohol, high blood pressure levels, high levels of LDL cholesterol, diabetic issues, high levels of estrogen, depression as well as smoking.

5. How can eating properly prevent these illnesses? Eating a healthy well balanced diet will supply the body and brain with all the nutrients they need for optimum performance. Choose a diet plan of fish, nut products, whole grains, olive oil, as well as abundant amounts of fresh produce. Always have an assortment of colour on your dish. Avoid trans fats and saturated fats but incorporate omega-3 fats.

6. How could exercising the mind protect against these diseases? Exercise increases the the flow of blood to the brain that can help maintain body and also brain function.

7. How can exercising your body prevent these illnesses? The Mayo Clinic reports that earlier studies show that physical exercise may produce an enzyme in the brain which prevents plaque buildup. Aerobic-type exercise also prompts elevated blood flow for the brain. You can even increase your bone density and help maintain muscle tone by using vibration plate machines.

Dementia isn?t a pleasant thought, but you shouldn?t overlook the prospect and do all you can to prevent this. If you take a proactive approach, then you will be doing all you can to help prevent dementia.

For more information about vibro plates and vibration plate exercises to help you workout even when you are susceptible to issues that can prevent other forms of physical exercise, visit www.vibroplateexercises.com to learn more.

From research at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, an innovative magnetic-based tool may treat peripheral artery disease

Vascular Magnetics, the first start-up company spun off by The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, has raised $7 million to advance development of an innovative drug delivery system using magnetically targeted nanoparticles to treat peripheral artery disease.

Vascular Magnetics, based in West Philadelphia, announced that Devon Park Bioventures, of Wayne, Pa., is the sole investor in this Series A financing agreement.

"It's exciting to see that one of our hospital's research discoveries has attracted investors to move it toward commercial development," said Philip R. Johnson, M.D., chief scientific officer and executive vice president, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "This work can have multiple benefitsdirectly to patients receiving a new treatment, and also to children whose lives will be improved by future research supported by revenue generated by this technology."

Vascular Magnetics was co-founded in 2010 by Robert J. Levy, M.D., William Rashkind Endowed Chair of Pediatric Cardiology at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and Richard S. Woodward, Ph.D. Levy, whose extensive laboratory research forms the basis of the proprietary drug delivery system, is the firm's founding scientist. Woodward, who has a business background in nanotechnology and polymeric coatings, is the company's president and chief operating officer. Vascular Magnetics has an exclusive license to the technology invented by Levy's cardiology research team at Children's Hospital.

Levy and Woodward were brought together through the University City Science Center's QED Proof-of-Concept Funding Program, the nation's first multi-institutional proof-of-concept program for life sciences technologies. That program partners academic scientists with business advisors to help realize the commercial potential of promising biological research.

The drug delivery system at the heart of the company's work is called vascular magnetic intervention. The system combines biodegradable, magnetic drug-loaded particles with a magnetic targeting catheter and a device that creates a uniform magnetic field. The system, which Levy has tested in animals, guides the particles to the walls of arteries narrowed by peripheral artery disease. At the disease site, the particles remain in place, slowly biodegrading and releasing the drug paclitaxel, which prevents re-obstruction of the artery.

The technology could fill an important unmet need in treating peripheral artery disease (PAD), in which blocked arteries, primarily in the legs, exact a heavy toll in some 30 million older adults in North America and Europe. Diabetes patients and smokers are particularly affected by this painful, debilitating condition, responsible for the majority of amputations performed in this country. Drug-eluting stents, currently used in heart disease, are less effective in PAD. Levy said that magnetic intervention could deliver more effective doses of drugs than the standard drug-eluting stents, and could be used to re-administer drugs as needed.

As a new platform technology, Levy added, vascular magnetic intervention could also be adapted to delivering other agents, such as therapeutic genes or cells, and has potential utility in treating heart conditions in children.

In the near future, Vascular Magnetics will complete preclinical development of its technology, with plans to begin its first clinical trial in 2014, in adult patients.

Radar Detector Review ? Escort 9500ix | Mobile Audio, Video ...

Escort 9500ix is ??the first Escorts windshield mounted sensor on the market. With innovative technology, this is one of the most technologically advanced radar detectors. ?

First and foremost, the great 9500ix radar detection range. In independent tests have established themselves as one of the best bands of all radar and laser detection. Right from radar sources around the corner, ambush attacks, this detector is protected on the storage of the driver excellent.

Such as with detectors conductive sensitivity of the device can be set. The three most sensitive modes are ?City,? Highway ?and? Auto. ?The? Auto ?mode is best for all situations the drive because of its unique ability to filter out false positives that can come from sources other than the police is appropriate. Many other detectors, awareness of the automatic doors and some other radar detectors. This unit has an extraordinary ability to ignore these false alarms.

The most striking feature of this device has GPS capabilities. This feature allows the leading radar detector to gain access to a constantly updated database of speed cameras and red light camera locations. As the driver approaches a speed camera or red light camera, radar detector will fall down to the next position, and the driver has enough time, or is aware of the red light camera attention.

GPS can also be the speed of the vehicle as a warning signal. Instead of braking detector aware of a threat, look at the car speedometer, and then, with speedometer, the driver simply looks at the speed of the detector, and slows down accordingly. If millisecond response time is critical in some situations, this function to another user detector.

Another large part of the GPS function is the variable speed radar sensitivity. The radar detects the speed of the vehicle is driven. Under that speed, the radar detector?s sensitivity. It is mainly a convenient way to switch between modes, without really thinking.

Thus the driver is running at higher speeds. The radar detects the speed and increase the sensitivity of the radar. Then when the driver approaches a town on the highway, radar detector senses this drop in speed, and increases the ability to filter out false alarms.

The last and probably the best feature of GPS is its ability to eliminate false alarms to remember. This is known as the ?Auto Learn? mode. When a radar source in exactly the same spot several times, has been found, for example, a supermarket, the GPS function does and keep the exact location of the radar false alarm, and the next time the driver is the source of the alarm is ignored. This feature is especially useful for people who drive through cities often. If a real threat displayed on a radar is known false alarm, radar detector, this new source, and warn him. This is ideal for cities with the secret police, but with this detector, the driver will be given in advance to warn of the impending threat, are available.

The Escort 9500ix radar detector also comes with many other notable features like voice mail alert and intelligent volume. The voice alert when a threat is detected, alarm and alert warning voice band radar is used to preach. In combination with intelligent volume of the voice alarm is a handy feature. When the vehicle speed increases, the intelligent volume volume will increase, so listen to the warnings of more than a higher road noise. When the vehicle is slowed down, the volume is reduced.

The Escort 9500ix radar detector is a large, leading technology and innovative design. This is still one of the best detectors available in the market for the coming year.

IBM, AT&T Unfairly Getting Small-Business Contracts: Study

Some of the world's biggest companies are benefiting from a program meant to help America's small businesses, according to a new study.

Lockheed Martin, IBM and AT&T all have snatched up federal government contracts meant for small businesses, according to a study from the American Small Business League.

Indeed, almost three-fourths of the top 100 federal "small" business contractors in fiscal year 2011, were actually large companies, says the report highlighted by the Project on Government Oversight.

Some of the biggest beneficiaries include Aegis, a 1,900-employee defense contractor, and Sierra Nevada, an 1,800-employee aircraft parts maker. Among the top recipients were Metro Machine Corp. in Norfolk, Va., which received almost $240 million in contracts even though it is a subsidiary of General Dynamics, a conglomerate with $2 billion in annual revenue.

The ASBL, which has repeatedly complained about instances in which large companies misrepresent their status to the government in order to qualify for such contracts, said such diversion of contracts deprives legitimate small businesses of more than $60 billion in contracts each year.

"Misrepresenting your firm as a small business is a felony, but the SBA has NEVER prosecuted a single offender," it says on the league's website. An SBA spokesman emailed the following statement from John Shoraka, the agency's Associate Administrator for Government Contracting and Business Development:

"To date, SBA has not published the FY11 small business government contracting data. Any reference to those numbers is merely a snapshot taken at a single point in time of a database that changes daily as federal agencies adjust their entries to account for anomalies and errors made when the original data was entered.

"Each federal agency is responsible for ensuring the quality of its own contracting data, but SBA conducts an additional analysis to help agencies identify any potential data anomalies. As part of its ongoing data quality efforts, SBA is continuing to work with federal agency procurement staff to provide tools to facilitate review of data, implement improvements to procurement systems and conduct training to improve accuracy. SBA will publish the official FY11 Small Business Procurement Scorecard this summer."

The industry group found that the government failed to reach its statutory goal of providing 23 percent of all federal contracts to small businesses in fiscal year 2010 and that there was an increase in the number of large businesses winning such contracts, as reported by the Project on Government Oversight.

The discrepancy could get worse. The SBA recently issued a rule that broadens the definition of companies that qualify as small businesses, as noted by POGO.

Spokesmen for Lockheed Martin, IBM and AT&T did not return emails seeking comment.

This story has been updated with comment from the Small Business Administration.

Chamber, Business Groups Aim To Weaken Anti-Bribery Law

A law that bans American companies from paying bribes to often-corrupt foreign leaders seems pretty obvious.

But the Chamber of Commerce is spearheading an under-the-radar battle to weaken the decades-old Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which was passed in 1977 in the wake of scandals like Bananagate, in which Chiquita admitted to bribing the president of Honduras.

In that year alone, more than 400 U.S. companies admitted to making questionable payments of more than $300 million to foreign government officials and politicians. Recent violators include Siemens AG, which was forced to pay a $450 million fine for distributing more than $800 million to governments around the world, and former representative William "Dollar Bill" Jefferson (D-La.), who was busted for bribing African governments to win contracts for business colleagues.

American companies have often chafed at the rule, complaining that it hurts their ability to compete for business against non-U.S. firms that are not subject to such anti-bribery laws. The Chamber, which corralled a number of other prominent trade associations to send a letter this week to the Justice Department seeking clarity on the law, has long lobbied against it.

The Chamber's Institute for Legal Reform hired former Bush administration attorney general Michael Mukasey last year and has spent millions to lobby on the FCPA and other bills.

This week is a particularly vulnerable time for DOJ with the collapse of one of its biggest bribery cases against more than a dozen defendants in a case involving military equipment contracts. Still in officials' sights are Avon, over whether it paid bribes in China to win a license there, and Wynn Resorts, which gave a $135 million donation to the University of Macau while seeking gaming licenses there, as reported by Reuters.

Pentagon Lets Down Whistleblowers, Says GAO

Members of the military who fear retaliation for blowing the whistle on fraud and other concerns may not get help from the Pentagon, according to a new Government Accountability Office report. Military brass take too long to investigate whistleblower complaints and have sometimes put the careers of whistleblowers in jeopardy, according to the audit. But the process also can transform the career of a grunt -- in one example cited by the GAO, a servicemember eventually was given a Bronze Star that had been denied to him due to reprisal.

What You Should Know About Diets | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

What is too much for one business owner is super simple for another, and that exists for many reasons. There are people who started in business on the web back in the 1990s and eventually incorporated diet myths into their operations, and they will confirm that all of that is totally normal. Once you get to a point where your business is in the black, then you will be in a position to hire contracted help ? something that can have a dramatic affect on your business. Even if you cannot afford outsourcing at the moment, you can plan for it or start on a limited basis. It is never a good idea to run straight ahead before you really know the ins and outs of any technique or approach. Outsourcing can be tremendous, but it can be a nightmare if you have never hired before and do not even know the best places to do that.

Everybody starts off new diets with lots of enthusiasm?enthusiasm that quickly disappears after a couple of weeks when the diet doesn?t go as well as hoped. While sometimes you will luck out and get fast results but more often than not you won?t be so lucky and it will take quite a lot more time and perseverance. This is why you should learn as much as you can about what actually works in terms of weight loss, no matter what kind of diet that you really want to try.

In terms of fixing your working out and eating habits, normal isn?t the way to go. This is because, in the US and other western cultures, being overweight and not getting enough exercise is considered ?normal?. This is why, when you use the people in your family, friendship circles and coworkers as your role models, there is a giant chance that you are going to wind up slightly overweight as well.

Learning how to relax and let go of stress can play an important role in your health and can even make it easier to lose weight. Stress causes lots of different problems including hormonal shifts which can then play into the slowing down of your metabolism. It?s even harder to lose weight then, even when you?re on a strict diet. A related issue is getting enough sleep every night, which can also help you feel less stressed out. If you don?t get enough sleep each night you will eat more food and have a tougher time losing weight than someone who gets a full nights? rest. There are a lot of factors that might not directly relate to the diet itself but they do have an impact on the results that you will get from it. One of the most often asked question regarding online promotions ? and it does not matter if your business is diet pills or rat removal ? is how the beginner to online business can realize the greatest benefits. The knowledgeable person can easily take things for granted, but people with limited experience will often struggle. One answer to this perpetual problem has been marketing forums because you can get acquainted with people who are doing the same things as you. Not all marketing and advertising strategies are suitable for all businesses, and so our short intros about any one particular approach will help you to have a better sense about how applicable it is. There are evergreen areas of marketing and advertising that are specific to the internet, but innovation is always a possibility that you should explore whenever the spirit strikes you. Searching out the perfect diet can get in the way of your being able to lose weight if you spend more time trying to find your solution than actually taking the actions that are necessary to cause weight loss to happen. Let?s face it -there?s a good chance you already know enough to at least have some success at losing weight, even if you never read another diet book in your life. Wanting more information is fine but you still need to be able to use your own common sense and actually pay attention to the things you do every day. You also need to think about the claims that other diets have made with your own eyes and your own common sense because otherwise it is easy to be misled by claims made by the various diet gurus.

Some people use all their will power to get themselves to skip meals, thinking that this will help them to lose weight. Not only will this only make you uncomfortable, it isn?t even going to work. Studies show that people who skip meals are more likely to snack, and these will often be the least healthy types of snacks. Skipping meals will also send the wrong message to your body, which makes your metabolism slow down and that is the exact opposite of what you want to have happen. The worst meal of all to skip is breakfast.

We have only provided an introduction along with several solid applications utilizing the principles of myths of dieting. Sure, you have just added to your business arsenal by reading this article, but we want to mention something about your general outlook and your web business. What we are talking about is not something we made up, and you can find a good deal of supporting information elsewhere. Other general categories of business owners are those who just want to stay in the game, and then there are those who strive to take over their market. You do have the power to change how you think, and we will tell you that negative-based thinking will always keep you down. Options; we all have them whether you choose to believe that or not.

After all of that, we are confident your grasp of the important factors about diet myths is much stronger. (AP) ? Republicans vowed Wednesday to reverse President Barack Obama's new policy on birth control, lambasting the rule that religious schools and hospitals must provide contraceptive coverage for their employees as an "unambiguous attack on religious freedom in our country."

The White House pushed back in the face of a political firestorm, arguing that Obama was sensitive to the objections and looking for a way to allay the concerns. Democratic women lawmakers put up a united front in defending the administration.

"Women's health care should not depend on who the boss is," said Illinois Rep. Jan Schakowsky.

The fight over the administration mandate escalated as House Speaker John Boehner accused the administration of violating First Amendment rights and undermining some of the country's most vital institutions, such as Catholic charities, schools and hospitals. He demanded that Obama rescind the policy or else Congress will.

"This attack by the federal government on religious freedom in our country cannot stand, and will not stand," Boehner, a Catholic and Ohio Republican, said in a floor speech rare for the speaker.

The contentious issue has roiled the presidential race and angered religious groups, especially Catholics, who say the requirement would force them to violate church teachings and long-held beliefs against contraception.

It also has pushed social issues to the forefront in an election year that has been dominated by the economy. Abortion, contraception and any of the requirements of Obama's health care overhaul law have the potential to galvanize the Republicans' conservative base, critical to voter turnout in the presidential and congressional races.

Clearly sensing a political opening, Republicans ramped up the criticism. Shortly after Boehner spoke, GOP senators gathered on the other side of the Capitol to hammer the administration and insist that they will push ahead with legislation to undo the requirement.

Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., called the new rule "an unprecedented affront to religious liberty. This is not a women's rights issue. This is a religious liberty issue."

The issue is not contraception, said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., but "whether the government of the United States should have the power to go in and tell a faith-based organization that they have to pay for something that they teach their members shouldn't be done. It's that simple. And if the answer is yes, then this government can reach all kinds of other absurd results."

Several Senate Democrats said they would challenge any effort to reverse the policy.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., pointed out that for about 15 percent of women, birth control pills are used to treat endometriosis and other conditions.

"It's medicine and women deserve their medicine," she said.

The White House, facing a public and political outcry, engaged in damage control, circulating letters and statements from outside groups defending its position.

Administration officials had signaled on Tuesday that a compromise was possible and made clear Wednesday it was still looking for a way to deal with the issue.

"The president is committed, as I've tried to make clear, to ensuring that this policy is implemented so that all American women have access to the same level of health care coverage and doing that in a way that hopefully allays some of the concerns that have been expressed," said White House spokesman Jay Carney, who added, "We're focused on trying to get the policy implementation done in the right way."

Options could include granting leeway for a church-affiliated employer not to cover birth control, provided it referred employees to an insurer who would provide the coverage.

Another idea, previously rejected by the administration, calls for broadening the definition of a religious employer that would be exempt from the mandate beyond houses of worship and institutions whose primary purpose is to spread the faith. That broader approach would track a definition currently used by the IRS, bringing in schools, hospitals and social service agencies that deal with the general public.

Republican White House hopefuls Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich have been relentless in assailing the administration, criticizing the president at campaign stops. Romney has accused Obama of an "assault on religion" and Gingrich called the rule an "attack on the Catholic Church."

But Romney has drawn criticism from his GOP rivals and the White House over policies when he was Massachusetts governor.

In late 2005, Romney required all Massachusetts hospitals, including Catholic ones, to provide emergency contraception to rape victims. Some Catholics say the so-called morning-after pill is a form of abortion.

Romney said he did not support the Massachusetts law, which passed despite his veto. But he also said at the time, "My personal view, in my heart of hearts, is that people who are subject to rape should have the option of having emergency contraception or emergency contraception information."

White House spokesman Jay Carney seized on that policy at his daily briefing Wednesday.

"The former governor of Massachusetts is an odd messenger on this given that the services that would be provided to women under this rule are the same services that are provided in Massachusetts and were covered when he was governor," Carney said.

He called it "ironic that Mitt Romney is criticizing the president" for a policy that Carney described as identical to the one in place in Massachusetts.

Boehner said that if the administration fails to reverse the policy, then Congress will act. He said that in the coming days, the House Energy and Commerce Committee will move ahead on legislation.

A group of House Democratic women sought to frame the issue in economic and health terms, arguing that birth control reduces health costs and stops unintended pregnancies.

In a conference call, Rep. Lois Capps, D-Calif., who said she spoke as a nurse, mother and grandmother, pointed out that 28 states have similar rules on coverage for birth control. Schakowsky pointed out that the rule affects nurses, secretaries and janitorial staff who may not be Catholic.

Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wis., said the church "can't impose its religious views on people and whether they can have health care."

But not all Democrats backed the administration. Tim Kaine, a Catholic seeking the Senate seat in Virginia, said he supports contraceptive coverage but thinks there should be a broader exemption for religious organizations. He made the comments in a radio interview Tuesday with the "HearSay with Cathy Lewis" program on WHRV in Hampton Roads, Va.

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who faces re-election in November, sent a letter to Obama complaining that the mandate is a "direct affront to religious freedoms."

Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Ill., said in January that the decision "violates the long-standing tradition of protection for conscience rights in federal law."

Robert JR Graham.com ? Master the Slight Edge

Success: The Slight-Edge Formula
by:?Daniel Sitter

Self-improvement; A great deal has been written on the subject, but does any anyone really know how to successfully implement a creative and manageable plan for its accomplishment? The concept involves goal setting, planning, time management as well as patience, faith, understanding and real desire. Too many times, people approach self improvement haphazardly, unfocused and unclear as to exactly what they want. This is not a paper specifically concerning goal-setting, that will be addressed another time in greater detail, but rather a blueprint for the implementation of the plan you generate during your own self-improvement goal setting exercise.

Many times, we set out on a self-improvement course of action with literally no idea of how to proceed, with only a loose idea of what we really want to accomplish. Basically, at this point, it?s just a dream of a better day. This is actually not what you want; after all, you expect success. You must believe success is possible and probable. Be expectant. Be confident.

Before you begin, sit down and write out your plan of action. Clearly write your goal, your timeframe, identify the specific steps to accomplish during the journey and the obstacles that you expect to encounter along the way. Yes, write this all down. Review it each evening before bed and again when you awaken in the morning. Keep your plan with you at all times and read it aloud to yourself several times during the day. This will imbed it deeply into your subconscious mind where it will steer you in the direction of your goal.

Jeff Olson talks about the Slight-Edge Formula for success. Imagine an incremental system where you consciously plan to improve just ?% each day, or even each week. Can you do that? Sure you can. Everybody can. It has been said that ?you can eat an elephant if you do it one bite at a time.? The same idea holds true with this concept. The premise is to experience minute improvements on a consistent basis that tend to compound over time like interest. A ?% improvement in any skill each day is a 1-?% improvement each week! A 7% improvement each month! An 84% improvement in just 1 year! It?s actually higher than that because all of your advances are compounding at an exponential rate! Are you beginning to see the potential of this compounding power at work within you?

The Slight Edge Formula for success is the answer. Do a little each day and reap the rewards you desire over time, while consistently moving in the direction of your goal. You will always get out in proportion to what you put in. Apply yourself. It pays big dividends!

Most people never begin. They may talk a big talk, but they fail to act. Only a few of those who do take action tend to persist over time. Are you one of the few who are determined to make your life different? Do you want changes badly enough? Then begin now. Persist. Make no excuses.

?What?s in it for me? or WIIFM is your mantra. What is it that?s in it for you that will drive you to pursue the goals that you have defined? Identify this and you have taken the first step toward the success you desire. This can potentially change your life? Nothing will happen until you first decide to get started. You have to make things happen. Do not wait for things to miraculously happen. They will not.

Choose to employ the Slight-Edge Formula into your everyday life events. It is simple, easy to implement and it really works.

(AP) ? What do you do after?recovering from a?serious illness? If you're Nick Cannon, you celebrate by attending the Super Bowl.

The entertainer was?hospitalized last month after suffering from a form of mild kidney failure, but he says he is now fully healed.

"This is a great place to get back and debut the healthy Nick," he said on Sunday during a break as the host of NBC's pre-game show. "Everybody's out here having a good time, and you know people were worried like, 'Is he going to be able to do the Super Bowl pre-show?' But I am 100 percent feeling good right now."

Cannon attributes his improved health to a change in diet, but says he does not eat the same food as wife Mariah Carey, who recently lost weight after giving birth to their twins Moroccan and Monroe.

"I used to be a fast-food junkie," Cannon explained. "She gets to have higher protein, which isn't fair because I love my steaks and I can't eat that anymore. Her carbs are lower so we are both on a diet, but it is different."

Cannon, who is a New York Giants fan, attended various events in the days leading up to the Super Bowl.

While his family was not with him, they were not far from his mind. When asked if he'd like to expand his brood one day, he laughed and said: "I would love to have more children. Now my wife on the other hand, I think the twins took a toll on her. She is like, 'I ain't doing that again.'"

Diet Health and Fitness ? For Lower Back Pain | Health Quotes

Lower back pain is so common and easily induced that 80% of adults have experienced the condition. However, lower back pain can be avoided or eliminated by following the proper diet health and fitness regimen.

If and when you experience pain or soreness in you back for more than one day you should visit your local chiropractor or doctor for x-rays. This is critical as most back pain will not go away on its own and will most likely worsen if ignored.

Most lower back pain is caused by injury, overuse of the back and/or muscle strain. After the initial and chronic pain has healed the best thing you can do for back pain treatment is to begin a fitness program of exercises designed to strengthen the muscles of your lower back.

A simple search in you tube will provide free videos to learn some of the many different types of lower back pain exercises. However, for optimal health and fitness you should try to perform a variety of exercises that will strengthen your entire body, as well as your lower back area.

Back Health And Fitness ? Diet And Weight Maintenance

The first thing I would recommend to dull your pain is that you avoid eating any refined sugar (white sugar), as sugar greatly amplifies any pain within your body. Try to eat as healthy a diet, mostly organic fruits and vegetables, as you can. Don?t overlook your diet health when you have pain or an injury. Your diet plays a very important role in the internal healing of injuries.

Staying slim is essential to avoiding and reducing back pain as well as being healthy in general. Any excess weight is extra strain on your back and aerobic exercise is your key to maintaining a healthy weight. Aerobic exercises like biking and walking are low-impact and can be easy on the lower back.

Back Health And Fitness ? Strengthening

Strength building is important for keeping your back conditioned. When working out you want to strengthen the areas that support your back like your:
* Abdominals
* Hips
* Legs

Unless you are already experienced in the area of fitness and strength training it would be a good idea to do so under the supervision of some type of trainer, doctor or physical therapist.

Back Health And Fitness ? Stretching

Most people, especially males, will overlook stretching as an important part of their health and fitness regimen. Stretching is just as important as the exercises you do so make sure that you spend the proper time stretching every day.

Your flexibility can only change gradually so it is important to stretch every day in order to consistently gain flexibility. Increased flexibility will drastically reduce your chance of injury and will enhance your muscle strength and power.

But, like strength training, stretching should also be done with some type of expert supervision or guidance so you don?t overdo it and hurt yourself. Hopefully some of these recommendations can reduce your pain and help you avoid any future occurences.

(AP) ? Former British Open champion Paul Lawrie chipped in for an eagle and a birdie on his way to winning the wind-shortened Qatar Open on Sunday, shooting a 7-under 65 to hold off Jason Day and Peter Hanson.

Lawrie finished with a 15-under total of 201 to win his seventh European Tour event and his second in Qatar. Day (65) and Hanson (67) tied for second, four strokes back.

It was Lawrie's second victory in a year ? he also won the Andalucian Open last March ? after a nine-year drought. Now in the top 45, he could contend for a spot in the 2012 Ryder Cup.

"I played lovely all week. But today I think tee to green, apart from my tee shot on 10th, I can't play much better than that," said Lawrie, who also won the tournament in 1999. "I actually felt I left three or four putts out there and got it around to 7 under on a golf course where the greens were pretty firm."

Lawrie downplayed his age, saying he is playing better now than he was in 1999 when he won the British Open. He added that his putting has improved significantly in the past few months, which allowed him to contend at the season-ending DP World Championship and again last week in Abu Dhabi.

"You get a little bit older and you kind of lose focus but I actually feel the opposite," Lawrie said. "I feel I'm getting better. I feel my ball striking has improved immensely since I turned 40. So it's great to win."

Lawrie came into the final round with a one-shot lead over Nicolas Colsaerts. The 1999 British Open champion started slowly, with only a birdie on his first eight holes. But just as several players, including Sergio Garcia (68), were challenging for the lead, Lawrie sank a 20-yard chip for eagle on the 9th hole to go up by two.

Day and Garcia continued their charge, but Lawrie recorded four birdies on a flawless back nine that included clutch birdie putts on 11 and 14. And when Hanson chipped in for eagle on 16 to pull within three, Lawrie responded with chip in for birdie on 17. He played it safe on No. 18 and closed out with a short par putt for the win.

Early on, it looked as if Garcia might overtake Lawrie for the win. The Spaniard opened with six birdies on his first 11 holes, including one on 10 that moved him into a tie for the lead with Lawrie.

But Garcia's putter went cold on the back nine, starting when he missed a two-footer for par on 13. Clearly flustered, Garcia then missed a 10-footer for birdie at the next hole. He took himself out of contention when he bogeyed the next hole.

"Obviously, when we got going nicely after 11 today, we had a chance of winning," said Garcia, who finished in a tie for fifth. "I needed probably to make three more birdies which was doable. Unfortunately, things kind of started going the wrong way and putts started not dropping and that's the way it goes."

Day also started strong, with four birdies on his first four holes to move up the leaderboard. The 23-year-old Australian bogeyed 9 but bounced back with four straight birdies to close within two shots of the lead. But he missed birdie putts on 15 and 17.

"I played great golf coming in. I just didn't putt that great," Day said. "I saw the leaderboard on 16 and I knew I had to birdie the last few holes. I just kind of ran out of steam there for a little."

Hanson, who came into the final round two shots back, quietly made a move when he ran off two birdies to finish the front nine. He stumbled with a bogey on 13 only to recover with a birdie on 14 and a chip in for eagle on 16.

First-round leader John Daly (67) finished fourth at 9 under, with Garcia, Jean-Baptiste Gonnet (65), Ricardo Gonzalez (70) and Soren Hansen (66) another shot back in a tie for fifth.

Third-ranked Lee Westwood (69) finished nine shots back after a roller-coaster round that included seven birdies but was also marred by four bogeys. He also apologized on Twitter for using profanity, posting: "Sorry about swearing on the 16th tee. Came off like a rocket and thought it was going further! Wash my mouth out! Perils of live tv."

The tournament was disrupted by wind all week, and organizers called off Friday's play and shortened the event to three rounds. Conditions improved Saturday and were calm Sunday.

DR. MERCOLA: ?SUPER SLOW? EXERCISE / Health / Dr. Pinna

GOLF A SPORT?

The Safest, Most Effective Form of Exercise?

By Joseph Mercola, D.O.

See Dr. Pinna?s comments below?.

Strength training is an integral part of a well-rounded exercise program, and is recommended for both sexes of all ages, including kids and seniors.
Women have reportedly started weight-training in record numbers ? and one result is that weight-training related injuries among women have increased by 63 percent.
MSNBC has assembled a list of four of the most common mistakes leading to injury, and how to avoid them.

Skipping your warm-up:

Working cold, stiff muscles can lead to sprains and tears. A dynamic warm-up can decrease your risk for injury.
Using sloppy form:

Proper form is the single most important factor in injury prevention. Stand straight, look forward, keep your abs tight, and keep your knees over your second toe.
Stressing your shoulders:

Doing too many exercises in which your elbows are pulled behind your body can overstretch the connective tissue in the front of the joints.

Don?t allow your elbows to extend more than two inches behind your body.

Neglecting opposing muscle groups:

Strength imbalances can make you more prone to injury. For every exercise that works the front of your body, be sure to do an exercise that targets the rear.
For more tips and information about these common mistakes, see the original MSNBC article. Here, I will address a couple of strategies that can not only make your weight training workouts safer, so that you?re less likely to sustain injury, but can also help simplify and speed up your routine.

Proper Warm-Up

The warm-up is a key component of your exercise program and can help you avoid injury.

According to John Catanzaro, a Certified Kinesiologist and Certified Exercise Physiologist who operates a private gym in Richmond Hill, Ontario, one of the most common mistakes people do with their warm-up is to do aerobics prior to weight training.

A proper warm-up should raise your body temperature by one to two degrees Celsius (1.4-2.8 degrees Fahrenheit), and, it only takes 10-15 seconds of muscular contractions to raise your body temperature by 1?C. So, instead of aerobics, which is non-specific in its target and takes much longer to perform, Catanzaro recommends the following warm-up routine before every workout.

1. Squat 9. Arms Horizontal
2. Split Squat 10. PNF Pattern
3. Toe Touches 11. Arm Circles
4. Waiter?s Bow 12. Wrist Flexion/Extension
5. Side Bends 13. Wrist Circles
6. Trunk Twists 14. Shoulder Shrugs
7. Arms Vertical 15. Head Tilt
8. Arms Vertical Alternating 16. Head Rotation

Start slow and shallow and gradually increase speed and range with each repetition. All you need is 5-10 reps per movement. Doing too many repetitions during your warm-up will only increase lactate levels and decrease your strength and performance. Following this recommendation, you could be done with your warm-up in about four minutes.

The Case for Super-Slow Weight Training

I recently posted an excellent interview with Dr. Doug McGuff, M.D., an emergency room physician and an expert in high-intensity interval training. While I?ve been recommending high-intensity anaerobic training (Peak Fitness) using an elliptical machine or a recumbent bike, Dr. McGuff is a proponent of high-intensity interval training using weights. By performing each movement in super-slow-motion, with minimal rest between exercises, you?re effectively getting a very high-intensity exercise.

Interestingly, while they appear to be very different on the surface, both types of training achieve many of the same results, from working your cardiovascular system to improving strength and endurance, to promoting the production of human growth hormone (HGH).

While being more effective than conventional strength training, this type of super-slow weight training is also much safer, as it actively prevents you from accidentally harming your joints or suffering repetitive use injury. This makes it an ideal form of exercise for virtually everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. As Dr. McGuff explains:
?Force is mass times acceleration. If you deprive yourself of the acceleration, you?re delivering almost no punishment to your joints. There?s no repetitive use injury. The forces are extremely low, and as you become more fatigued, you?re becoming much weaker. So you?re actually delivering a smaller and smaller force to your body as you fatigue.?
Weight Training IS Cardiovascular Training?

Research over the past several years has really revolutionized the way we look at exercise. Not only have researchers found that traditional aerobic exercise is one of the least effective forms of exercise, it?s also one of the most time consuming, and could even be counterproductive. You?re really getting the least amount of bang for your buck when you spend extended amounts of time running on a treadmill.
High intensity interval training on the other hand, has consistently risen to the top as the most effective and efficient form of exercise.

While the fitness industry divides exercise into categories such as anaerobic-, aerobic- and cardiovascular training, fitness experts like Dr. McGuff and Phil Campbell point out that in order to actually access your cardiovascular system, you have to perform mechanical work with your muscle?and can do that on an elliptical machine, on weight training equipment, or using free-weights. So truly, weight training isn?t just strength training, it?s a cardiovascular workout.

To better understand this, you need to know that your heart has two different metabolic processes:

1. The aerobic, which require oxygen for fuel, and

2. The anaerobic, which do not require any oxygen

Traditional strength training and cardio exercises work primarily the aerobic process. High-intensity interval training, such as Peak Fitness, on the other hand, work your aerobic AND your anaerobic processes, which is what you need for optimal cardiovascular benefit. You?re actually getting MORE benefits from high-intensity training than you do from aerobic/cardio, in a fraction of the time?all because you?re utilizing your body as it was designed to be used. You can literally be done in about 20 minutes, compared to spending an hour running on the treadmill.

Even more astounding, according to Dr. McGuff you only need 12 minutes of Super-Slow type strength training once a week to achieve the same growth hormone production as you would with Peak Fitness!

So truly, if you?ve struggled finding time for an effective exercise routine, this could be the solution you?ve been looking for. The key to make it work is intensity. The intensity needs to be high enough that you reach muscle fatigue. If you?ve selected the appropriate weight for your strength and fitness level, that would be somewhere in the neighborhood of just seven or eight repetitions.

Furthermore, when the intensity is high, you can also decrease the frequency of your exercise. In fact, in order to continue to be productive, the higher your fitness level, the more you can decrease the frequency without losing benefits. This is because, as a weak beginner, you can exercise three times a week and not put much stress on your system. But once your strength and endurance improves, each exercise session is placing an increasingly greater amount of stress on your body (as long as you keep pushing yourself to the max). At that point, you?ll want to reduce the frequency of your sessions to give your body enough time to recover in between.

The Importance of Recovery

The importance of recovery is something I?ve just recently started to fully appreciate. I have known the importance of ?Listening to Your Body,? and always advocate this when it comes to selecting foods. But this also applies to exercise and recovery. The epiphany I had with Dr. McGuff was that I wasn?t applying the ?listen to your body? principle with respect to my exercise program. According to Dr. McGuff, you know you?re recovered from your exercise when you start getting a build-up of restless energy and spontaneously feel the urge to engage in some form of physical activity again.

I will report on my results as I refine my program so you can learn from it. The lesson for me, over the past several years, is that life is an exciting journey. So just learn as much as you can from your mistakes and continue to seek new information from different mentors, and learn to listen to your body so it can guide you into a path that will provide you with the most efficient and effective benefits.
However, please realize I have been exercising for 40 years and am in the advanced fine tuning stage. If you are just starting, I would strongly recommend two to three times a week for Peak Fitness at full intensity. Once you become fit you can start to experiment with your program and fine tune it. But you will likely reap the most benefits by using Peak Fitness three times a week.

How to Perform Super-Slow Weight Lifting

Essentially, by aggressively working your muscle to fatigue, you?re stimulating the muscular adaptation that will improve the metabolic capability of the muscle and cause it to grow. McGuff recommends using four or five basic compound movements for your exercise set. These exercises can be done using either free weights or machines. The benefit of using a quality machine is that it will allow you to focus your mind on the effort, as opposed on the movement.
Dr. McGuff recommends the following five movements:
1. Pull-down (or alternatively chin-up)
2. Chest press
3. Compound row (A pulling motion in the horizontal plane)
4. Overhead press
5. Leg press
Here?s a summary of how to perform each exercise:

1. Begin by lifting the weight as slowly and gradually as you can. The first inch should take about two seconds. Since you?re depriving yourself of all the momentum of snatching the weight upward, it will be very difficult to complete the full movement in less than 7-10 seconds. (When pushing, stop about 10 to 15 degrees before your limb is fully straightened; smoothly reverse direction)

2. Slowly lower the weight back down

3. Repeat until exhaustion

4. Immediately switch to the next exercise for the next target muscle group and repeat the first three steps
This super-slow movement allows your muscle, at the microscopic level, to access the maximum number of cross-bridges between the protein filaments that produce movement in the muscle.

Once you reach exhaustion, don?t try to heave or jerk the weight to get one last repetition in. Instead, just keep trying to produce the movement, even if it?s not ?going? anywhere, for another five seconds or so. If you?re using the appropriate amount of weight or resistance, you?ll be able to perform four to eight repetitions. As mentioned earlier, when done in this fashion, your workout will take no more than 12 or 15 minutes. And you really cannot get any more efficient than that!

Dr. Pinna says?

The Mayo Clinic says ?super-slow? is no more effective than
any other type of work-out.

It appeals to that lazy streak in all of us.

I have been in athletics all my life. The people in the best
shape in terms of health, strength and endurance work hard. They are
drenched in sweat at the end of their work-out except if they are
swimmers.

I?ve tried ?super-slow? and find it boring.

The best exercise is not exercise?it is sport.

Competing against another tough human will make you
exhausted, but you will love it.

Try tennis, racquetball, soccer or competitive swimming.

You will see what I mean.

And?forget Golf. It?s not a sport. It is a ?game? like poker.
