Atheist billboard hits snag in Hasidic neighborhood

Arabic/English (top) and Hebrew/English (bottom) billboards with a message from American Atheists that are slated to be erected in heavily Jewish and heavily Muslim neighborhoods this week.

By Kari Huus, msnbc.com

For American Atheists, Tuesday was meant to be a big day for getting out their godless message ? with the unveiling of a billboard in a heavily Jewish neighborhood in New York City. But?plans to erect the sign in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn were altered at the last minute when the owner of?site refused?access to the installers.

Written in Hebrew and English, the sign was to have read: "You know it?s a myth ? and you have a choice." It is an advertisement for the upcoming "Reason Rally" in Washington, D.C., billed as the biggest atheist gathering in U.S. history, and for the American Atheists' convention immediately afterward.

It was also intended to urge?non-believers to overcome their fears and?"come out" in their heavily religious communities.

"We believe that (these) communities are teeming with atheists due to the emails we regularly receive," said American Atheists President Dave Silverman, a nonprofit that seeks civil rights for non-believers and absolute separation of church and state. "We have received a dozen emails from Hasidic Atheist Jews since we announced the billboards. ? They feel totally alone. We want to tell them they are not alone."

Silverman was at the site with the advertising company to?erect?the giant sign atop a residential building.

But landlord Kenny Stier refused to allow workers from the advertising company Clear Channel into the building, said Silverman. He told The Brooklyn Paper that he believes powerful rabbis in the largely ultra-Orthodox Hasidic Jewish area persuaded Stier to block the billboard.

"It has been very disconcerting to see that the traditional victims of religious bigotry have become the purveyors of religious bigotry," said Silverman, who was raised in the Jewish faith.

Stier could not?immediately be reach for comment, but?The Brooklyn Paper quoted him as saying, "I don?t want to get involved in this."

Williamsburg Rabbi David Niederman told the paper the sign is "a disgrace. ... The name of god is very holy to us and to the whole world."

Atheists bill big names for 'coming out' party in the capital

The atheist organization has already selected a new site along the Brooklyn-Queens expressway not far?away, and will try again on Thursday?to erect it there.

On Wednesday, American Atheists were slated to post another billboard to near the Islamic center of the heavily Muslim community in Paterson, N.J. ? identical except written in Arabic and English. They have not received any blowback in that community, Silverman said.

"We?re not particularly disturbed about it,? said Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on American Islamic Relations. "We believe it?s their First Amendment right to put them up. ? Obviously they placed them to be provocative, but that?s also their right."

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- In residential neighborhoods near manufacturing industries, a breath of air may be more hazardous than refreshing depending on the location, finds a recent study involving a Kansas State University geologist.

Saugata Datta, assistant professor of geology at Kansas State University, along with researchers at Columbia University and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Department of Environmental Health Sciences, explored levels of the elemental metal manganese in airborne particulate matter -- a combination of dust, soot and other organic and inorganic particles suspended in a gas or liquid. Five counties across the U.S. were sampled as researchers characterized manganese and identified if manganese concentrations in the airborne particulate matter varied by geographic region.

"Manganese is an element that was originally thought to have a lot of nutritional aspects for humans and was relatively harmless health-wise," Datta said. "But more recently that thinking is changing. Manganese is a neurotoxin at certain levels when in water, so there is a question about if it's toxic in air, too."

Manganese can be introduced into particulate matter -- and consequently the air -- through vehicle exhaust; vapor emissions from power plants, manufacturing industries and smoke stacks; battery and electronics manufacturing; welding; and auto manufacturing, Datta said. Tests on subways have also shown elevated levels of manganese in particulate matter because of abrasion from the steel tracks.

For the study the team analyzed samples of airborne particulate matter from Sacramento County, Calif.; Pinellas County, Fla.; Anoka County, Minn.; Harris County, Texas; and Maricopa County, Ariz. Samples were collected by Johns Hopkins Particulate Matter Center and examined using spectroscopy and other techniques at the National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York.

Air samples among the sites varied in total manganese, ranging from 0.01 micrograms/mg to 0.67 micrograms/mg. Samples' compositions also varied in types of manganese, which included manganese-2 oxide, manganese-3 oxide, manganese-2 acetate, manganese-2 pyrophosphate and manganese-2 sulfate at various levels at each location.

"Because the levels of manganese have not been monitored very much, it's hard to say whether these are high, low or average levels," Datta said.

Studies on manganese and human health, though, have shown the element to be problematic, Datta said. Toxicological studies have linked airborne particulate matter containing manganese to respiratory and cardiovascular health. Additionally, long-term inhalation of manganese has been attributed to manganism, an irreversible disease similar to Parkinson's.

Researchers also found that the samples of airborne particulate matter from residential neighborhoods near gas, electric and petroleum manufacturing and refineries showed the higher levels of total manganese than samples collected from around the industrial sites.

The researchers' study, "Use of X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) to Speciate Manganese in Airborne Particulate Matter from 5 Counties Across the U.S.," was published in a recent issue of the journal Environmental Science and Technology. It is believed to be an important study to show that the particulate matter toxicity varies by location across the U.S., and one of the first to identify manganese oxidation states in airborne particulate matters.

The study was funded by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Datta is also conducting a study on India's groundwater, which contains manganese and arsenic. The study includes Sankar Manalikada Sasidharan, a master's student in geology, India, and Sophia Ford, a geology undergraduate student, Wilson, Kan.

The Kansas State University team has found that if arsenic is present in the groundwater, so is manganese, which turns the base platform around a well gray. The team also found that higher levels of arsenic might be occurring with lower levels of manganese and vice versa.

According to Datta, studies by research teams -- McArthur et al 2012 , ES&T and Biswas et al 2011, ES&T -- found that elevated levels of manganese in India's drinking water led to decreased intellectual function in children. However, the 2011 report from the World Health Organization does not include a guideline for manganese in water.

"These studies are a unique set of work that not many people are looking at," Datta said. "We're attacking manganese, understanding the toxicity levels and understanding its chemistry in both air and in water. Both are pathways to be ingested by humans. In air most of it is caused by vehicles and industries, but in water it is affected by sediments that leach out. We want to attack back."

Anna Brand: 'Bethenny Ever After' Recap: A Sandbox Situation

Last week, Bethenny Frankel took her managerial duties to a whole new (though not so surprising) level: She insisted her food blogger, Nick, partake in some eyebrow threading, and when she showed concern disgust when she saw that Julie was essentially living out of a bag stored under her desk. Of course, Bethenny's less neurotic side did make an appearance. After all, she had a fairly normal lunch date with pal Hoda Kotb (minus the wazoo talk) and enjoyed time playing with Bryn at the kid's table at a Hamptons dinner party. As always, B's eccentricities never fail to entertain, one way or another, and this week was no exception.

"Can't Get Enough of You" Bethenny

  • Trying to get in her driver's good graces by complimenting his outfit ... until she calls out his "ink" and "ice," which he ignores ... until they bond over both being "hustlers." Sometimes sacrifices need to be made to guarantee a fun car ride.

  • Admitting to crossing the professional line on many occasions, for the sake of humor.

  • Affirming the above by joking about her lingerie to her driver. And surprised when he takes it one step further and responds with an inappropriate baby wipes comment. Here's to hoping B's driver makes many more cameos in episodes to come.

  • Running through the sprinklers with Bryn, because a baby is the perfect excuse to do that past age 10 without judgment.

  • Having a photo booth at her Skinnygirl cocktail party and posing drunk in a sailor hat. As much as B's a kook, she sure is a good time.

  • Reinforcing Hoppy's manhood when he starts to doubt it.

  • Going on a private boating trip with Hoppy and realizing that sometimes, not bringing Bryn is a good thing for their relationship. This was obviously hard for B to admit, so props.

  • Something may have broken on the sailboat and B surprisingly keeps a calm face. Though, she won't just leave it at that -- B needs to make sure Hoppy knows to note that she's keeping her temper in check. It's OK, baby steps.

  • Allowing Hoppy a man cave in their new apartment. At least one that's conducive to her roughly three-bedroom-sized walk-in closet. Girl's got shoe needs ... understandable.

  • Taking advantage of a quiet home with Julie by making some strong cocktails for the two of them. Even better, getting the nice decanter out for some makeshift sangria.

  • Not fighting back when Julie puts B in her place about her psychotic work schedule pre-Hoppy and Bryn. We'll let the bulging eye-popping slide. Sidenote: Julie is way more insightful than Dr. Armadillo.

Total: 11

"Run for Your Life" Bethenny

  • Blatantly ignoring Hoppy after he gives her the most adorable hug on fresh-cut Montauk grass and tells her he misses her. Doesn't look like the "second-year of marriage woes" B's been describing, unless we're counting her stone-cold reaction.

  • Screeching over the fact that Hoppy didn't call 9-1-1 after running over potentially diseased raccoons on the highway. The Chance B hasn't run over a human small animal with her suspect driving skills is very unlikely.

  • Saying Hoppy's the one with, "ice in his veins." Too easy.

  • Trying to be a matchmaker for B's business partner and friend. Only she puts Julie's sister, Joanie, on the shelf and leaves Julie in the dust to live forever under her microscopic desk while inhaling Skinnygirl margarita-infused mothballs. We get that Julie is no Joanie, but come on, give the girl a push.

  • Bashing Hoppy's "vest, ball-hugging, high-waisted faded jean" style after he notes her questionable all-fuchsia ensemble. Then, freaking out that he made a painful dig at her.

  • Hoppy rightfully noting B's hypocrisy when she describes her former single life as practically shopping around the grocery store, looking for the next best 100-calorie snack pack on a daily basis and saying had he said it, she would have flipped out. And the veins begin to pop ...

  • Hiring a multi-person design team to get the new apartment in perfect shape and already threatening to stab one of them within the first 30 seconds of meeting.

  • Describing her office space as a torture chamber. No one flinches to this news, at least on the outside.

  • Staring with cold-blooded eyes when the designer explains that a six-month job is going to be a struggle with a three-month deadline. Um, hello?

  • Obsessing over the fact that Hoppy's parents let Bryn play in a sandbox, which clearly means Satan is lingering inside her baby now.

  • Listening to Dr. Armadillo shamefully self-promote explain his team-building overnight sailboat trip for married couples, and slowly perspiring from her forehead to her chest.

  • Finally agreeing to talk to Hoppy about it ... in the same way one might agree to a final meal before the death penalty.

  • Getting irritated over the fact that Hoppy isn't all that interested in the overnight trip due to potential seasickness and deciding it's only because he doesn't care about working on their marriage.

  • Having major word-vomit when she says the real issue in her marriage with Hoppy is "not liking each other."

  • Saying the only time Hoppy is real and actually communicates is when they're alone. Guessing she forgot to look around at the camera crew and feel the microphone neatly tucked under her shirt.

  • Laughing in Hoppy's face when he says he's not perfect. Because that's got to be the most infuriating thing a person can do during a fight. And she knows it, too.

Total: 16

There you have it. "Run for Your Life" Bethenny took a stand this week, leaving "Can't Get Enough of You" to recoil into a bottle of half-opened Skinnygirl Margarita. Hoppy really got B's blood boiling with his sensitivity and cute dimples -- tough life -- until she finally snapped with a good 'ole "we don't like each other" comment. Ah, the sweet scent of not-so-newlyweds. This, of course, unfolded a whole mess of insecurities laced with baby Bryn's sandbox demons. We left off with an awkward mess of a fight, and it seems the fun only continues next week with a wildly uncomfortable parked car argument and dramatic "watch me walk away forever" parking lot exit. 'Til then, dear friends. 'Til then.

How Car Leases Work | Vegas Valley Homes - takylaov's posterous

4900652333 f8dacb9533 m How Car Leases Work

Car leasing is a popular alternative to borrowing to purchase a business car, but it can be a great alternative for individuals too. Whether you want to purchase a car or just rent one for a while, auto leasing could be the answer.

It involves renting a car, similar to leasing an office or house. When leasing a car, the finance company purchases the car of your choice. They then allow you to use the car for the term of the lease in return for a monthly payment.

If the vehicle is used solely for business purposes, the repayments made are completely tax deductible when car leasing. It involves paying the depreciation which becomes your tax deduction. The residual value is the depreciated asset price at the end of the term.

Benefits

Some of the benefits of car leasing are:

Payments can be a tax deduction for business vehicles
It enables you to change your car every few years
Interest and monthly payments are fixed, so costs are known in advance
Payments are often lower than a car loan
The car is used as security against the lease, so interest rates are often lower than car loans
They offer flexible terms from 2 ? 5 years
It can be used for either new or used vehicles.

Types of car leasing

There are three main types of car loans

operating leases,
finance leases and
novated leases.

The main difference between operating and finance leases is at the end of the car leasing term.

With an operating lease, the lender retains ownership of the car, whereas with finance leasing, you are responsible for the residual or balloon payment and you assume ownership. Options at the end of a finance lease are; pay out the balloon payment and keep the car, trade in the vehicle, or refinance the balloon payment with another lease or loan.

A fully maintained car lease is a finance lease that includes running costs of the car such as services, fuel, tyres etc. This type of car leasing is perfect if you need to have fixed costs each month.

Novated leasing works quite differently to operating and finance leasing. If you are an employee interested in leasing a car, you should consider novated leasing if you wish to salary package a car.

Who does car leasing suit?

It suits anyone who wants the latest car or whose business requires a car that is always new. It is possible for personal, business or mixed use cars, but car leasing is particularly useful for financing cars used solely for business purposes. Because payments are often lower than car loan repayments, it is an attractive to anyone struggling to afford a car loan.

'Pawn Stars': Chumlee Buys A Can Of Elephant Manure (VIDEO)

On "Pawn Stars" (Mon., 10 p.m. EST on History) Chumlee Russell took a punt on a very rare and esoteric item -- a can of "Zoo Doo."

The can was full of "Guaranteed Genuine Rotted Elephant Manure," which the label said originated at the Washington Park Zoo, and which was billed as "nature's most potent fertilizer."

The seller had bought it from a local auction company and joked that although the "Elephant Elixir" was basically priceless, he'd take $10,000 for it. Chumlee's counter-offer was $20.

After thinking about it for a moment or two, the seller agreed to take the $20 and they shook hands. Sold!

"Pawn Stars" airs Mondays at 10 p.m. EST on History.
