Europe faces difficult search for growth

(AP) ? On paper at least, European leaders agree: They need stronger growth measures to help their economies expand out of their 2?-year-old government debt crisis. Figuring out exactly what those new steps might be will be the hard part.

Persistent political divisions ? neatly bridged by a Group of Eight summit statement that advocates a mix of austerity and growth promotion ? and lack of money stand in the way of a comprehensive European growth strategy. Analysts said markets were likely to look past the verbal deal, with news about Greece's struggle to stay in the eurozone and an informal European Union summit Thursday in Brussels more likely to set the tone.

At Saturday's G-8 summit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel ? under urging from U.S. President Barack Obama and French President Francois Hollande ? signed onto a statement that called for mixing painful cutbacks with growth-promoting measures to deal with a crisis that threatens the global economy.

The leaders warned that budget deficits have to come down. But they also acknowledged that an approach that's based mostly on austerity and longer-term reforms can't help countries out of recessions this year or next. That's the approach that has dominated the continent's German-led attack on the crisis since it erupted in late 2009, when Greece admitted its finances were broken.

"Our imperative is to promote growth and jobs," leaders said in their final declaration after Saturday's summit. While they "commit to fiscal responsibility," the leaders also supported spending on education and public works. They also said heavily indebted countries should have the chance to fix their budgets in ways that take into account how well their economies are doing at the moment and support "confidence and economic recovery."

They said little about specific steps and left exactly what to do up to individual countries, saying they recognize "the right measures are not the same for all of us."

The statement comes as markets look ahead to an informal European summit meeting Thursday, and to a June 17 election in Greece. An indecisive poll May 6 left no Greek party with enough votes to govern. A new government that rejects the austerity required under bankrupt Greece's ?130 billion bailout from other eurozone countries could lead to it leaving the euro and spreading financial chaos.

Cornell University economist Eswar Prasad said the statement splits the difference among the leaders positions and said Merkel, a chief advocate of austerity, had not altered her stance. The language "is cautious and guarded and leaves much room for difference of opinion so that each of the G-8 leaders can go back and say they got the other leaders to agree."

"Market expectations for the summit were quite low and those expectations have been met," he said. "I don't think this is going to make much difference for markets."

At the summit, Merkel openly rejected any sense that a pro-growth stance meant stimulus spending. It's a stance fed by annoyance among voters at home that Germany, which backs the biggest share of the European bailout fund, is helping rescue countries that were not careful with their finances. Germany faces national elections next year.

So where will growth come from?

In their summit fudge, European leaders were in effect recognizing limited steps that are already taking place in a modest and informal growth program. It's clear that the slack economy in Spain, for instance, means the country will not reach its target deficit of 3 percent of gross domestic product by next year, in effect taking more time to meet EU budget rules.

The slipping target underlines the austerity trap: To keep borrowing money by selling bonds to investors, Spain must show it is reducing its deficit, which was 8.9 percent of GDP last year. So it is severely cutting back spending. That removes stimulus from the economy. Partly as a result, the economy sank into recession. And as companies and people make less money, they pay less in taxes. The cutbacks make balancing the budget even harder.

In addition to letting deficit targets slip, European officials have talked about adding money to the European Investment Bank, a development bank that loans money for public projects, and finding ways to make quicker use of unspent EU aid funds that are typically used for things like roads, water treatment plants and ports to help poorer EU members catch up.

Prasad said such spending of EU funds could be "potentially useful if they can be packaged in a way that is politically acceptable in Germany."

Another trend happening in the background is larger wage settlements in Germany. Germany dominates as an exporter because it kept labor costs down with reforms in 2004. Some think less restraint on pay could boost consumption and spending on imports at home and even out trade imbalances within the eurozone. The top industrial union, IG Metall, won a deal for a 4.3 percent raise over 13 months in a key region in southwestern Germany over the weekend.

It's a trend that officials can bless, but it doesn't require action on their part.

Yet economists say that emerging measures such as slower deficit reduction and more EU infrastructure spending, while helpful, will not enough. Not enough money is involved.

A bolder growth strategy could include movement toward some form of group borrowing among all 17 eurozone countries to pay for public works projects, said Marc Ostwald, strategist at Monument Securities in London. That could be a prelude to eurobonds ? collective borrowing and central control of budget spending. "The thing they absolutely have to decide is how they're going to move toward fiscal union," said Ostwald. "Germany may not want eurobonds right now, but there are going to be eurobonds."

Ostwald and other economists say dealing with Europe's banking system, on shaky ground for several years, would be one of the strongest measures Europe could take now.

An EU-wide guarantee for bank deposits could shore up depositors' confidence their money is safe no matter what happens at the national level. An EU-wide banking regulator with the power to force banks to restructure would improve the flow of credit and boost confidence. Europe's shakier banks are heavily dependent on emergency credit from the European Central Bank, a situation that has persisted for several years, starting with the onset of the global financial crisis.

"We have had a damaged financial system since 2007 and 2008 but it has never been addressed," said Nicolas Veron, senior fellow at economic think tank Bruegel in Brussels. He advocates a task force to restructure troubled banks along the lines of the one that led a restructuring of the U.S. automobile industry, in which General Motors and Chrysler shed debt and reshaped their businesses under bankruptcy court protection.

"As long as we have a sick financial system, it will be very tough to get investment and consumption back to levels compatible with robust growth in the eurozone," Veron said.

Yet all those more decisive solutions face obstacles. Germany is against collective borrowing to help more indebted countries, fearing it will pay the freight as the biggest eurozone member. National governments are reluctant to give up control over banks, wanting to promote their own financial industries. Letting countries slow down deficit reduction will only roil markets unless it is seen as part of a genuine effort to fix finances in the long term.

"There is no miracle," said Veron. "It is going to be a long hard slog in the best of scenarios."

Spoleto Festival celebrates Philip Glass' 75th

(AP) ? The Spoleto Festival USA opens its 36th season Friday and among the planned performances is an opera by American composer Philip Glass to commemorate his 75th birthday and his long relationship with the internationally known arts festival.

The Charleston festival is staging the American premiere of "Kepler," about the famed German astronomer Johannes Kepler. Only the score has previously been performed in this country.

"We had been talking about various different things and this seemed the most appropriate," said festival General Director Nigel Redden, who first met the composer 40 years ago. "It's the American stage premiere but it's also the premiere of a new version and it's in English. Philip, I think, was anxious to have it done in English to make it more accessible."

Glass has had a long relationship with Spoleto. Among other performances over the years, the first American production of his "Book of Longing," based on the poetry of Leonard Cohen was performed in 2007. A year earlier, a minimalist fanfare by Glass was performed at the opening ceremonies on a so-called car-illon. The car-illon consisted of a line of BMWs, each with a speaker on the roof and a license plate displaying the note it played.

"This festival was founded by a composer and we feel increasingly it's desirable to have composers here," Redden said.

The Spoleto Festival USA was founded here in 1977 by composer Gian Carlo Menotti as a companion to his Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. He left the Charleston festival in 1993 in a dispute over his successor and died five years ago at age 95, still estranged from the festival he started here.

The festival's opening ceremonies are Friday and during the following two weeks there will be more than 140 shows by 60 groups and performing artists on stages across the city.

A second Spoleto opera is the American premiere of "The Phoenix Pavilion" by Guo Wenjing, a contemporary Chinese composer. It features an orchestra of four traditional Chinese instruments blended with Western instruments.

The visual arts offering is the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art's show by Motoi Yamamoto, who uses salt to create large-scale art installations that resemble ? depending on how you view it ? lace, waves or mazes.

The Charleston installation won't be completed until the night before the festival opens, because Yamamoto works painstakingly sitting on the floor to create patterns for the installation. But Yamamoto sees his work as a form of meditation.

The Japanese artist estimates it will take 120 hours to complete using about 400 pounds of salt.

Clemson University architecture students designed a stairway and an overlook so patrons can get a better look at the salt design that Yamamoto creates to match the floor space available. Yamamoto began working with salt to keep alive the memory of his sister who died of brain cancer at age 24.

The show at the Halsey runs through July 7th when the public is invited to come and scrape the sand off the floor and then spread it into the Cooper River near the South Carolina Aquarium.

But for Yamamoto, that's all part of the art.

"I am happy, not sad," at the end of a show, he said. "At the ceremony, people go to the sea and I can imagine the cycle of the salt is like the cycle of life."

New evidence in Trayvon Martin case raises more questions

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Trayvon Martin was shot through the heart at close range. George Zimmerman had a broken nose, bruises and bloody cuts on the back of his head.

The lead investigator in the case wanted to charge Zimmerman with manslaughter in the weeks after the shooting but was overruled.

These are among the details revealed in nearly 200 pages of documents, photos and audio recordings released Thursday in a case that's riveted the nation. Yet it's still unclear what exactly happened and whether it was racially motivated.

The evidence supports Zimmerman's contention that he was being beat up when he fired the fatal shot. At the same time, it bolsters the argument of Martin's parents that Zimmerman was profiling Martin and that the whole confrontation could have been avoided if not for Zimmerman's actions.

Many of the pertinent questions remain unclear: What was in Zimmerman's mind when he began to follow Martin in the gated community where he lived? How did the confrontation between the two begin? Whose screams for help were captured on 911 calls? And why did Zimmerman feel that deadly force was warranted?

Another opportunity for answers isn't likely to come until a hearing later this year in which Zimmerman is expected to claim the shooting was justified under Florida's "stand your ground" law. Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, didn't return a phone call seeking comment Thursday.

Martin's autopsy indicated that medical examiners found THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, when they tested Martin's blood and urine. The amount described in the autopsy report is such a low level that it would have played no role in Martin's behavior, said Larry Kobilinsky, a professor of forensic science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.

"This kind of level can be seen days after somebody smokes," Kobilinsky said. "If it comes up in the case, I would be surprised. It wouldn't benefit the defense, it wouldn't benefit the prosecution, and if the defense tried to bring it up, the judge would keep it out."

A police report shows the 17-year-old had been shot once in the chest and had been pronounced dead at the scene. The autopsy says the fatal shot was fired from no more than 18 inches away.

The evidence supporting Zimmerman's defense includes a photo showing the neighborhood watch volunteer with a bloody nose on the night of the fight. A paramedic report says Zimmerman had a 1-inch laceration on his head and forehead abrasion.

"Bleeding tenderness to his nose, and a small laceration to the back of his head. All injuries have minor bleeding," paramedic Michael Brandy wrote about Zimmerman's injuries in the report.

Whether Zimmerman was injured in the Feb. 26 altercation with Martin has been a key question. The 28-year-old has claimed self-defense and said he only fired because the unarmed teenager attacked him.

Zimmerman was not arrested for weeks because he invoked Florida's "stand your ground" law, which does not require a person to retreat in the face of a serious threat. He was released on bail and is in hiding while he awaits trial on a second-degree murder charge. He has pleaded not guilty.

Other evidence supports the contention of Martin's parents that Zimmerman was the aggressor.

The investigator who called for Zimmerman's arrest, Christopher Serino, told prosecutors that the fight could have been avoided if Zimmerman had remained in his vehicle and awaited the arrival of law enforcement. He said Zimmerman, after leaving his vehicle, could have identified himself to Martin as a concerned citizen and talked to him instead of confronting him. The report was written on March 13, nearly a month before Zimmerman's eventual arrest.

He said there is no evidence Martin was involved in any criminal activity as he walked from a convenience store to the home of his father's fiancee in the same gated community where Zimmerman lived.

The lawyer for Martin's parents seized on the investigator's recommendation.

"The police concluded that none of this would have happened if George Zimmerman hadn't gotten out of his car," said attorney Ben Crump. "If George Zimmerman hadn't gotten out of his car, they say it was completely avoidable. That is the headline."

The release of evidence did little to clear up whose voice is screaming for help in the background of several 911 calls made during the fight.

Since first hearing the calls in early March, Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, has been unequivocal in saying that it was her son's voice on the tapes.

But Serino wrote in a report that he played a 911 call for Martin's father, Tracy, in which the screams are heard multiple times.

"I asked Mr. Martin if the voice calling for help was that of his son," the officer wrote. "Mr. Martin, clearly emotionally impacted by the recording, quietly responded 'no.'"

Zimmerman's father also told investigators that it was his son yelling for help on March 19.

"That is absolutely positively George Zimmerman," Robert Zimmerman said. "He was not just yelling, he sounded like he was screaming for his life."

Investigators sent all the recordings to the FBI for analysis. They were asked to determine who was screaming, and also if Zimmerman might have used an expletive in describing Martin. Prosecutors said in their charging documents that Zimmerman said "(expletive) punks" in describing Martin as he walked in the neighborhood.

But the analyst who examined the recordings determined the sound quality is too poor to decipher what Zimmerman uttered. In regards to the screams during the altercation, there also wasn't enough clarity to determine who it is "due to extreme stress and unsuitable audio quality."

The trajectory of the bullet ? straight through Martin's body ? doesn't shed light on whether Zimmerman and Martin were standing or on the ground, Kobilinsky said.

Kobilinsky added he thought the evidence diminished prosecutors' case for second-degree murder.

The case has become a national racial flashpoint because the Martin family and supporters contend Zimmerman singled Martin out because he was black. Zimmerman has a Peruvian mother and a white father.

Two acquaintances painted an unflattering picture of Zimmerman in police interviews.

A distraught woman told an investigator that she stays away from Zimmerman because he's racist and because of things he's done to her in the past, but she didn't elaborate on what happened between them.

"I don't at all know who this kid was or anything else. But I know George, and I know that he does not like black people. He would start something. He's very confrontational. It's in his blood. We'll just say that," the unidentified woman says in an audio recording.

A man whose name was deleted from the audio told investigators said he worked with Zimmerman in 2008 for a few months. It wasn't clear which company it was.

The man, who described his heritage as "Middle Eastern," said that when he first started, many employees didn't like him. Zimmerman seized on this, the employee said, and bullied him.

Zimmerman wanted to "get in" with the clique at work so he exaggerated a Middle Eastern accent when talking about the employee, the man said. The employee told investigators that Zimmerman made reference to terrorists and bombings when talking about him.

"It was so immature," said the employee, who ended up writing a letter to management about Zimmerman.

Zimmerman's parents say he wasn't racist. They say he had mentored black students and had a black relative.

In a police interview, Zimmerman's father, Robert, described the toll the case had taken on family members who also are in hiding because of safety concerns.

"It just seems like it's an avalanche and I'm standing at the bottom of it," Robert Zimmerman said.

When you eat matters, not just what you eat

When it comes to weight gain, when you eat might be at least as important as what you eat. That's the conclusion of a study reported in the Cell Press journal Cell Metabolism published early online on May 17th.

When mice on a high-fat diet are restricted to eating for eight hours per day, they eat just as much as those who can eat around the clock, yet they are protected against obesity and other metabolic ills, the new study shows. The discovery suggests that the health consequences of a poor diet might result in part from a mismatch between our body clocks and our eating schedules.

"Every organ has a clock," said lead author of the study Satchidananda Panda of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. That means there are times that our livers, intestines, muscles, and other organs will work at peak efficiency and other times when they are?more or less?sleeping.

Those metabolic cycles are critical for processes from cholesterol breakdown to glucose production, and they should be primed to turn on when we eat and back off when we don't, or vice versa. When mice or people eat frequently throughout the day and night, it can throw off those normal metabolic cycles.

"When we eat randomly, those genes aren't on completely or off completely," Panda said. The principle is just like it is with sleep and waking, he explained. If we don't sleep well at night, we aren't completely awake during the day, and we work less efficiently as a consequence.

To find out whether restricted feeding alone?without a change in calorie intake?could prevent metabolic disease, Panda's team fed mice either a standard or high-fat diet with one of two types of food access: ad lib feeding or restricted access.

The time-restricted mice on a high-fat diet were protected from the adverse effects of a high-fat diet and showed improvements in their metabolic and physiological rhythms. They gained less weight and suffered less liver damage. The mice also had lower levels of inflammation, among other benefits.

Panda says there is reason to think our eating patterns have changed in recent years, as many people have greater access to food and reasons to stay up into the night, even if just to watch TV. And when people are awake, they tend to snack.

The findings suggest that restricted meal times might be an underappreciated lifestyle change to help people keep off the pounds. At the very least, the new evidence suggests that this is a factor in the obesity epidemic that should be given more careful consideration.

"The focus has been on what people eat," Panda said. "We don't collect data on when people eat."

The strategy used by Google to decide which pages are relevant for a search query can also be used to determine which proteins in a patient's cancer are relevant for the disease progression. Researchers from Dresden University of Technology, Germany, have used a modified version of Google's PageRank algorithm to rank about 20,000 proteins by their genetic relevance to the progression of pancreatic cancer. In their study, published in PLoS Computational Biology, they found seven proteins that can help to assess how aggressive a patient's tumor is and guide the clinician to decide if that patient should receive chemotherapy or not.

The researcher's own version of the Google algorithm has been used in this study to find new cancer biomarkers, which are molecules produced by cancer cells. Biomarkers can help to detect cancer earlier in body fluids or directly in the cancer tissue obtained in an operation or biopsy. Finding these biomarkers is often difficult and time consuming. Another problem is that markers found in different studies for the same types of cancer almost never overlap.

This problem has been circumvented using the Google strategy, which takes into account the content of a web page and also how these pages are connected via hyperlinks. With this strategy as the model, the authors made use of the fact that proteins in a cell are connected through a network of physical and regulatory interactions; the 'protein Facebook' so to speak.

"Once we added the network information in our analysis, our biomarkers became more reproducible," said Christof Winter, the paper's first author. Using this network information and the Google Algorithm, a significant overlap was found with an earlier study from the University of North Carolina. There, a connection was made with a protein which can assess aggressiveness in pancreatic cancer.

Although the new biomarkers seem to mark an improvement over currently used diagnostic tools, they are far from perfect and still need to be validated in a larger follow-up study before they can be used in clinical practice. It remains an open problem to turn these insights into novel drugs which slow down cancer progression. A first step in this direction is the group's cooperation with the Dresden-based biotech company RESprotect, who are running a clinical trial on a pancreas cancer drug.

TU Dresden is a leading German university, whose Center for Regenerative Therapies was awarded excellence status in the national excellence initiative. The work was a cooperation between the bioinformatics group of Prof. Dr. Michael Schroeder and the medical groups of Dr. Christian Pilarsky and Prof. Robert Gr?tzmann.

South Carolina woman struck by flesh-eating bacteria disease

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) - A new mother of twins in Greenville, South Carolina, is the latest victim of a rare and potentially fatal flesh-eating bacterial infection, health officials said on Thursday.

Lana Kuykendall was in critical but stable condition at Greenville Memorial Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Sandy Dees said.

Kuykendall, who gave birth to twins earlier this month at a Georgia hospital, came home to South Carolina and had severe pain in her leg, her husband, Darren Kuykendall, told a local television station. Within 15 minutes of noticing that the painful spot on her leg was spreading, she went to the hospital, he said.

Lana Kuykendall has had several surgeries and has been on a ventilator, Dr. Jerry Gibson, an epidemiologist with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, told Reuters on Thursday.

"She has the worst kind of bacterial infection," Gibson said. "It destroys tissues and invades the long membranes. We see four or five cases a year in South Carolina. There's no prevention."

Two other cases of flesh-eating infections have been reported recently in South Carolina and Georgia but Gibson said, "These cases don't cluster together except randomly."

Kuykendall was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, a flesh-eating infection that can destroy muscles, skin and tissue.

Different bacteria can cause the condition. Gibson said he had not seen Kuykendall's medical chart and did not know what type of bacteria was to blame.

Necrotizing fasciitis can be caused by group-A streptococci or by staphylococci, common bacteria that live on people's skin and in their noses, he said.

"Normally, they do nothing," Gibson said. "Sometimes the group-A strep causes strep throat. Sometimes the staph causes a skin infection. Rarely, people can become infected in a place that's usually sterile - heart, lung, tissue under the skin - and have group-A strep where it shouldn't be.

"This is a condition that scares people," he said. "Patients are usually very normal and then they deteriorate fast. It usually starts at the site of a break in the skin. People may wash it out and it suddenly starts progressing."

Gibson said he does not know if Kuykendall's infection could have started in the hospital where she gave birth.

"It started growing on her leg," he said.

Necrotizing fasciitis has a high mortality rate. "It moves so fast and often requires very invasive surgery to correct it," he said.

In another recent case, Georgia college student Aimee Copeland, 24, is being treated for necrotizing fasciitis at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. She has had most of one leg amputated and was expected to suffer the loss of her fingers as well.

Copeland contracted the infection after a zip-line accident in which she fell and cut her leg along the Little Tallapoosa River near Carrollton, Georgia. Doctors blamed her infection on the Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria, which are found in fresh or brackish water.

A former South Carolina fire chief, Glenn Pace, told a local television station he had been battling the disease since early April, spent 20 days in the hospital and had three surgeries on his foot but did not have to have his leg amputated.

The infection is caused by "something subtle, sometimes in a person who has poor nutrition or alcohol use but also in people who have no immune deficiencies," Gibson said.

The "flesh-eating" infection is not communicable, he said.

The sister of a Burbank, Ill., bride found stabbed to death in her apartment over the weekend said her new brother-in-law called a relative on the day the body was found to report he'd left his new wife bleeding after a "bad fight."

Estrella Carrera's body was found Sunday, two days after a hastily-planned City Hall wedding. Her new husband, 30-year-old Arnoldo Jimenez, disappeared, but not before reportedly placing a call to his sister.

"She said that he was crying and he was really nervous," explained Jazmin Carrera, the bride's sister, of the phone call. "He said they had a really bad fight and he had left her bleeding."

Illinois police on the hunt for groom of slain bride found in bathtub

Police said they're aware of the reported phone call and are looking into it. A warrant was issued Tuesday for Jimenez's arrest.

Authorities are pleading with Jimenez to turn himself in "for the sake of his family and especially his children,'' said Burbank police Capt. Joseph Ford. "I am sure they are very concerned for his well-being."

Most of the bride's family disapproved of her relationship with Jimenez, who is the father of one of Carrera's children, a 2-year-old boy.?Jimenez had hit and bruised her sister in the past, Jazmin Carrera told the Associated?Press.

Ford said Jimenez was previously arrested for domestic violence in another city in a case that did not involve Carrera. Police don't know what Jimenez does for a living, although he was last known to be driving a black 2006 Maserati, an expensive car.

"We do not believe Jimenez is a danger to others, but we certainly do not know his mind frame at the present time," Ford told the AP.

Since the killing likely took place mere hours after the couple went to Carrera's Burbank apartment, the suspect had a day to flee the metropolitan area or even the state before the body was found, Ford said.?

"It was a very brutal killing," Ford said. "We do our jobs every day, of course. But something like this really motivates you to work even harder."

Just two days after her wedding, Estrella Carrera, 25, was found stabbed to death in her own bathtub. She was still in the dress she wore at her wedding reception. WMAQ-TV's Lauren Jiggetts reports.

The Bible and Man's Spiritual Needs (III): Goals In Life ...

?We hold these troths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness? (The Declaration of Independence).

As young people approach maturity, they think more and more about goals in life. ;Childhood dreams of ?What will I be when I grow up?? are replaced by immediate and pressing problems of choosing whether to go to college, trade school or a job, whether to train for one career or another, whether to get married and have a family or to put off such responsibilities. These decisions are both important and difficult, yet they are merely a portion of the greater question all, whether young or old, must answer: ?What shall I make of my life??

I am certain that every normal person would list happiness as a major goal in life. Yet, although all seem to exercise their ?unalienable Right? of the ?pursuit of Happiness,? relatively few seem to achieve that end. If happiness, both immediate and permanent, is our over-all objective, we need to identify a more concrete goal, a means, that will help us achieve that paramount end. How should one live in order to be happy?

Solomon, the great wise man of old, addressed himself to this problem in the book of Ecclesiastes. Are his observations of value to us? King Solomon ?exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches and for wisdom? (1 Kings 10:23). He demonstrated that great practical wisdom by conducting experiments into the various ways a man can live in order to determine by personal observation the true road to happiness (cf. Eccl. 2:3). As the wealthiest man in the world, one whose immense treasures were too vast to accurately count (cf. 1 Kings 10:4-7, 14), he possessed the financial ability to undertake any such trial that he so desired. As a man inspired of God he could infallibly record the results of his great experiments. Thus, Solomon was uniquely qualified to speak authoritatively concerning the way to happiness.

Immediately some young skeptic is heard to sneer, ?Solomon may have been smart, but what could he know about how to live today? Why, he?s been dead for almost 3.000 years!? Solomon himself dispensed with this objection by noting the unchangeableness of life (Eccl. 1:9-10). Certainly outward things change. Whereas, only a generation ago, many still used a horse as the fastest means of travel, today giant rockets have taken men to the moon, and people cross the oceans in jet airplanes in only a few hours. But man himself, his basic needs and desires, have not changed one iota since the days of Solomon, or even of Adam. The inspired observations are as apropos in our modern society as they were in ancient Israel.

Many think the road of human wisdom is the way of happiness. They want to garner as much as possible of worldly philosophy and culture, hoping in this way to achieve ultimate self-improvement and thence happiness. Solomon followed the pathway of human wisdom as far as man has ever traveled. Is this the road he would have us walk? First, we must realize that man, through human wisdom alone, is incapable of guiding himself either to God or to true happiness (Jer. 10:23; Isa. 55:8-9; 1 Cor. 1:19-21). All human philosophy will do for the man who makes it his guide is take him as a captive of war away from Christ, the Captain of our salvation (Col. 2:8-10).

Young people, it is a fine thing to get an education in order to help you succeed at some worthwhile career. But use education as a tool, not as an end itself. This world abounds with ?educated fools? who imagine themselves to be wiser and better than others because of degrees attained in school. Is human wisdom the road to happiness? According to the great wise man, the more we learn of this kind of wisdom, the more we experience ?grief? and ?sorrow? (Eccl. 1:17-18). Certainly, human wisdom is not the way to happiness, and the attainment of great philosophical prowess should not be our primary aim in life.

Others think happiness can be found in the pursuit of worldly pleasures. Some give themselves over to a life of sinful abandon, living for the pleasure of the moment. More and more young people, even many who claim to be Christians, attempt to find happiness in such sinful pleasures as dancing, mixed swimming, pre-martial sex, etc. Is this the way to be happy? The sobering truth is, man, being a responsible creature, cannot escape the consequences of his own actions (Gal. 6:7-8). The people in this life who make both themselves and those who love them the most utterly miserable are those who have given their lives over to sinful pleasures. The ultimate consequences of such action is spiritual death (Rom. 6:23), eternal punishment (Rev. 21:8).

But many people today, while not giving their lives over to activities sinful in themselves, have made the pursuit of worldly pleasures their goal in life, thinking happiness can be thus achieved.

?Never in history have leisure and recreation attained the status they enjoy in the U.S. today . . . .

?Year after year, Americans are spending more tine and money on leisure activities than any other people . . . .

?. . . for more and more Americans, self-fulfillment means self. Indulgence and full-time pursuit of pleasure? (U.S. News & World Report, May 23, 1977, pp. 60-61).

How many, both young and old, are simply too busy with ball games, fishing, golfing, boating, hunting, and the relentless pursuit of pleasure in general to have time to simply worship the Lord in the assembly of the saints or to tell a neighbor the wonderful story of the saving power of the Gospel? Such people have, whether consciously or not, made the pursuit of worldly pleasures their goal in life and the means by which they expect to attain ultimate happiness.

This path also leads to despair.! It is the way of wasted opportunity and ability, uselessness and selfishness. It is the road of the short-sighted, who can see only the momentary pleasure and remain unprepared for eternity. It is a path of emptiness, providing no fulfillment of one?s higher spiritual needs and desires. It is, according to the wise man, the way of ?vanity? (Eccl. 2:1-2), i.e., that which is empty and void of any good whatever and utterly useless.

There are those who think to find happiness in the road of drunkenness, escaping from reality through the liquor bottle, marijuana cigarette or heroin needle. But drunkenness, while promising happiness, only rewards its slaves by destroying their health, minds and morals (Prov. 23:29-35) and eventually their souls (1 Cor. 6:9-10). The one who ?is deceived? by the lying promises of alcohol and other mind altering drugs ?is not wise? (Prov. 20:1).

Many there are who make the attainment of earthly wealth and power their goal and means to achieve happiness. Should riches and power be one?s aim? Wealth is deceptive. It promises great security and happiness, but it does not have the power to deliver (Lk. 12:15-21). The love of money, while preventing one from ever being satisfied with the amount of material goods he possesses, will also cause one to lose his soul (1 Tim. 6:6-10). Thus, those who make the attainment of wealth and power their objective in life are fools (Lk. 12:20-21).

Solomon certainly knew this fact. He said that all his work for the amassing of wealth and power was ?vanity and vexation of spirit,? because he would leave it to his heir, not knowing whether he would be wise or foolish (Ecc. 2:9-11, 18-19). Poor Solomon. His heir, Rehoboam, was an utter fool, who caused the kingdom to be divided and Solomon?s great wealth eventually to fall into the hands of heathen kings.

If all these roads of life lead to vanity, then what is left? Is there no road to true happiness? Solomon, having examined thoroughly all the pathways of life, advised:

?Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them? (Eccl. 12:1 ).

?Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

?For God shaft bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil? (Eccl. 12:13-14).

Young person, while you still possess the strength of youth, before you are too old to enjoy life, due to the troubles, frailties and pains of advancing age, follow the path of true happiness, real joy and peace unutterable. Remember the God Who formed you and for Whose use you were placed here. Turn and serve Him.

This is the way to attain ?joy unspeakable? and a reward of happiness that lightens the load of youth, eases the pain of age and is transformed into the immeasurable happiness of a home in Heaven (1 Pet. 1:3-9). Thus living to the glory of God gives you true purpose in life, for this is your very reason for being (Isa. 43:6-7).

What are we to conclude? How can one live in order to be happy? What should be one?s goal and path? Certainly it should not be human wisdom, worldly pleasure, drunkenness or wealth and power. All these are but ?vanity? (Ecc. 1:2; 12:8). Which way then?

Crossroads announcing $25 million ad push

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An independent group favoring Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney is launching a $25 million, monthlong advertising campaign in 10 states against President Barack Obama, further escalating an expensive TV ad war in presidential battlegrounds six months before Election Day.

Crossroads GPS plans to open the effort Thursday by spending $8 million on a TV ad that castigates Obama on the economy by using his own words against him.

"We need solutions, not just promises," says a 60-second commercial that's to run in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

It shows clips of Obama making pledges that critics say he hasn't kept on issues like taxes, health care and federal deficits.

"We must help the millions of homeowners who are facing foreclosure," Obama says in a clip from June 2008. The ad then says: "Promise broken. One in five mortgages are still under water."

Obama, Romney and their allies are in a rush to define each other negatively in voters' eyes before Americans tune out during the summer. And already both sides are going for the jugular, a sign of a sharply negative race between now and November.

Crossroads GPS' ad push is the latest to illustrate the degree to which this presidential campaign is playing out under dramatically looser campaign finance laws in the wake of a series of Supreme Court decisions that allowed independent groups to raise and spend unlimited donations as long as they don't coordinate directly with the campaigns they support.

It also comes at a time when several other Republican-leaning super PACs have been spending millions on ads in key states to tear down Obama while Romney ? the underfunded challenger to the record-shattering Democratic president ? focuses on raising money after a primary season that left him broke and battered.

The super PAC Restore Our Future, staffed with former Romney aides, has spent $4.3 million, while Americans for Prosperity, the Koch brothers' group, has spent $5 million. The American Future Fund, whose goal is to promote conservative and free-market ideas, is spending an additional $4.7 million to run a one-minute ad suggesting Obama hasn't cracked down on Wall Street because of his campaign's fundraising. "Tell Obama to stop protecting his Wall Street donors," the ad says.

On the Democratic side, Obama's campaign has launched its own $25 million, month-long ad push in the most competitive general election states. In recent days, it's started going after Romney's business credentials, specifically his time at the helm of the private equity firm Bain Capital. The campaign was running an ad Wednesday on the matter but in just a handful of states and at a very low price tag, just under $100,000.

But the real money to promote the same message was coming from a pro-Obama super PAC, Priorities USA Action. It's spending $4 million to air its new ad, which is remarkably similar to the one from the Obama campaign. Both highlight the failure of GST Steel, a Kansas City, Mo.-based company purchased by Bain Capital that went bankrupt and laid off 750 workers in 2001.

Unlike the groups on the right, Priorities USA Action has struggled to raise money, taking in about $10 million through its super PAC and affiliated nonprofit arm by the end of March. The group has spent only $2.7 million on ads in May.

Still, Obama's campaign opened the month of April with more than $100 million in the bank, a 10-to-1 fundraising advantage over Romney.

But the president's edge is minimized by the campaign cash raised by Republican-leaning super PACs.

Crossroads GPS told the IRS it raised more than $77 million through December. Donors could include individuals, businesses or trade groups. Without naming names, Crossroads reported two gifts of $10 million each and four of more than $4 million.

American Crossroads, its ally, has raised $100 million so far this election cycle to defeat Obama and support the Republican nominee. Combined, the Crossroads twins have announced plans to spend as much as $300 million to influence the presidential election, with longtime George W. Bush political adviser Karl Rove guiding them.

While the Republican groups legally can't coordinate directly with the Romney campaign, they do coordinate with each other. Leaders of some leading Republican super PACs attend a monthly meeting hosted by Crossroads to share information and devise strategy to deny Obama a second term. That may mean, for example, taking turns ensuring Romney has a presence on the air ? or, rather, the Republican criticisms against Obama are aired ? even if his campaign itself can't afford to run its own ads yet.

The Romney campaign has spent no money on TV ads since Romney's Republican opponents dropped out and cleared his path to the nomination.

Republicans have generally welcomed the emergence of super PACs, and several GOP-leaning groups spent millions to take control of the House and pick up six Senate seats in 2010. Obama sharply criticized the emergence of super PACs that year but ultimately green-lighted contributions to Priorities USA Action after it became clear that his campaign and other Democrats would be vastly outgunned otherwise.

By law, campaigns and the outside groups are forbidden from working with each other. But at times like this, the lines of separation seem blurred if not crossed.

Strategists for the super PACs insist they are operating independently and are not relying on signals from the presidential campaigns as to what advertising strategy to pursue. But campaign finance watchdogs are crying foul, arguing that super PACs have effectively become high-dollar shadow campaign operations for candidates otherwise constrained by much stricter federal campaign finance rules.

"Candidate-specific super PACs are simply arms of the presidential campaigns and need to be treated as such and be subject to contribution limits," said Fred Wertheimer of Democracy 21, a campaign finance reform advocacy group. "The idea that these groups are independent is a fiction in reality terms and, we believe, a fiction in legal terms."
