US ambassador tweets anger with Russian media

The U.S. ambassador to Russia was back at it again Thursday on Twitter with questions about how Russian media gets hold of his schedule, raising broader concerns about surveillance during a time of tension between Washington and Moscow.

Michael McFaul, no stranger to Twitter controversy since taking up his post in Moscow in January, told his more than 21,300 followers he was frequently dogged by representatives of NTV, a Kremlin-friendly television station.

"Everywhere I go NTV is there. Wonder who gives them my calendar? They wouldn't tell me. Wonder what the laws are here for such things?" McFaul said in one tweet posted to his account, @McFaul.

"I respect press right to go anywhere & ask any question. But do they have a right to read my email and listen to my phone?" McFaul also tweeted. "When I asked these 'reporters' how they knew my schedule, I got no answer."

McFaul was apparently describing an encounter with a self-described NTV television crew before a meeting with a Russian human rights activist.

Footage of the encounter posted on the NTV website shows a clearly irritated but mostly smiling McFaul, coatless under a wet snow, sparring for several minutes in Russian with a woman holding a microphone who says she is from NTV.

"Your ambassador to our country walks around all the time without this. They do not interfere with his work. And you are always with me -- at home," McFaul said in the clip.

"Aren't you ashamed to do this? It is an insult to your country when you do this, do you understand that?"

He said his meeting with activist Lev Ponomaryov, whom he said he has known for 25 years, was part of his job, just like a meeting with President Dmitry Medvedev two days earlier.

Blogger Alexey Navalny, a vocal opponent of Vladimir Putin, reacted to McFaul's tweet on his own account, saying "I don't understand McFaul. He's got diplomatic immunity. He can just lawfully beat up the NTV journalists. Come on, Mike! One for all!"

State Department officials described McFaul's tweets as rhetorical and said they did not necessarily reflect formal concerns over surveillance by the Russian government or media. ?

"A rhetorical question, in and of itself, is not directed at anyone," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.

"Many of our chiefs of mission have Twitter accounts and they are allowed to express themselves. We have full confidence in their ability to express themselves on matters of U.S. policy."

Tripping up on Twitter
McFaul is among a number of senior U.S. diplomats who have taken to Twitter as the State Department attempts to harness social media to get the U.S. government's message across.

But the personal style of the new communication has at times caused controversy.

The Russian government rebuked McFaul, a former White House adviser on Russia, earlier this month after he tweeted his concern over the detention of protesters who challenged Vladimir Putin's presidential election victory.

Russia and the United States say they are committed to improved ties, but have seen differences grow over issues including the Syrian crisis and U.S. plans for a missile defense shield in Europe.

Putin accused U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in December of stirring protests against his 12-year rule by encouraging "mercenary " Kremlin foes. Washington has dismissed the accusations.

McFaul, a Stanford University professor who specialized in analyzing the development of democracy in Russia and the former Soviet Union, was criticized by Russian state television when he arrived to take up his new post in January.

Following a meeting with opposition leaders shortly after his arrival, a commentator on state television said McFaul was not an expert on Russia but simply a specialist in the promotion of democracy.

Other commentators and media reports have suggested he is seeking to help opponents topple the government. A film aired on NTV earlier this month hinted that opposition demonstrations were funded by the White House with the aim of undermining Putin.

But a fossil discovery reveals there was another creature around 3 million years ago and it gives new insight into the evolution of a key human trait ? walking on two legs.

The creature came to light when an international team of researchers unearthed a partial foot in eastern Africa. Like Lucy, it walked upright, but had a grasping foot that it used to climb tree branches. Scientists said it's now clear that various human relatives experimented with upright walking.

"This is just another window into solving the problem of how we got from a primitive foot to the modern human foot," said Bruce Latimer of Cleveland's Case Western Reserve University, who helped discover the fossil remains.

Various hominin species have co-existed throughout human evolutionary history, but this is the first sign of another during Lucy's time.

So what was this tree-climbing and ground-dwelling creature? Scientists don't yet know because no skull or teeth have been recovered to make a determination. But it's clear the foot did not come from Lucy's species, Australopithecus afarensis.

It's rare to find prehuman feet because bones are fragile and don't preserve well. So American and Ethiopian scientists led by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History were excited when they excavated eight foot and toe bones in 2009 in the remote Afar region of Ethiopia, 30 miles north of where Lucy was discovered in 1974.

By analyzing the bone structure and dating the surrounding dirt, the team concluded the fragments came from the right forefoot of a human relative that lived 3.4 million years ago. While Lucy had humanlike feet, this creature was less advanced.

The discovery was detailed in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature. The authors did not name the new species because they know so little about it.

The first Lunch Beat was held in June 2010 in an underground parking lot in Stockholm. Only 14 people showed up. But they had so much fun they immediately planned another event. Word spread, and now the Swedish capital has monthly Lunch Beats that attract hundreds.

Similar events have been held in at least 10 other Swedish cities and in Finland and Serbia. Portugal's first try will be in Porto next month, organizers said.

The party starts at noon and goes on for one hour. There's no alcohol, which gives it a different ambiance than nighttime clubbing, said Daniel Odelstad, the 31-year-old organizer of Lunch Beat Stockholm.

"People are sober, it's in the middle of the day and it is very short, effective and intensive," he said. "You just have to get in there and dance because the hour ends pretty quickly."

Heeding that advice, nearly 500 people paid 100 kronor ($14) to attend at Kulturhuset, a cultural center in downtown Stockholm.

Anyone can organize a Lunch Beat event as long as they follow some simple rules, Odelstad said.

"The first rule of Lunch Beat is that you have to dance," he said while checking prepaid tickets at the door. "If you don't want to dance during your lunch hour, then you should eat your lunch somewhere else."

The events are not-for-profit, with cover charges being used for rent and sandwiches so dancers don't return to work hungry.

Some first-time visitors were amazed at how quickly typically reserved Swedes burst out of their shells. As the DJ pumped up the base, office clerks mingled with business-suit types, the young mixed it up with the middle-aged and university students danced with everyone.

"It was just like bang, straight in to the disco," said Kristoffer Svenberg, a 34-year-old artist.

But isn't it uncomfortable returning to an office after an hour of dancing? European workers, a tad more relaxed than Americans, say no.

Ellen Bengtsson, 29, came to Lunch Beat with more than a dozen people from a government office.

"It's great," she said. "We'll go back sweaty together."

Syria troops bomb towns, EU grounds First Lady

Syrian forces bombed towns and clashed with rebels in several regions as activists said thousands staged anti-regime protests and the European Union slapped sanctions on the country's first lady.

In Geneva on Friday, the UN Human Rights Council ordered a probe into violations in Syria to be extended, asking investigators to map out abuses since a deadly crackdown on protests in the country erupted in March 2011.

UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan was to travel this weekend to Moscow and Beijing, the two countries that have blocked Security Council action against Syria over the crackdown.

But he had no immediate plans to return to Damascus.

Adding to pressure on the regime, the EU on Friday agreed to sanction President Bashar al-Assad's glamorous British-born wife Asma, along with his mother, sister and sister-in-law.

Diplomats in Brussels said EU foreign ministers had agreed an assets freeze and travel ban on the four women and eight other members of Assad's entourage.

Asma Assad, whose parents live in Britain where she grew up, cannot be barred entry to the country, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said.

"But given that we are imposing an asset freeze on all of these individuals and a travel ban on other members of the same family and the regime, we are not expecting Mrs. Assad to try to travel to the United Kingdom at the moment."

Assad himself was targeted last May 10, along with his younger brother Maher and four cousins.

Washington welcomed the EU's decision.

"We are gratified that the EU has taken yet another step in tightening the noose on the Assad regime," US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced that Syrians in the United States would be allowed to stay beyond their visas and avoid the risk of returning to their violence-torn country.

"Conditions in Syria have worsened to the point where Syrian nationals already in the United States would face serious threats to their personal safety if they were to return to their home country," Napolitano said.

Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators turned out Friday in the hot spots of anti-regime revolt across Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

At least 33 people were killed in violence nationwide, the Britain-based group said: 17 civilians, 13 soldiers and three army deserters.

Nine civilians died in districts in Homs hit by gunfire and rockets, it reported.

At least three deserters and a civilians were reported killed in fighting between regime forces and army deserters in Aazaz in the northern province of Aleppo near the Turkish border, the Observatory and activists said.

"Troops are bombing and helicopters flying overhead," activist Mohammed Halabi told AFP in Beirut by telephone from the province. The fighting had been going on since midday Thursday, he said.

Aazaz, strategically positioned on the road to neighbouring Turkey, is a supply route for Free Syrian Army rebels.

Fierce clashes also erupted mid-afternoon between soldiers and deserters in the villages of Haritan and Anadan, between Aleppo and Aazaz, Halabi said. The Observatory said two civilians were killed in Anadan.

Troops shelled the two villages after deserters attacked a convoy of tanks headed for Aazaz, the activist said.

The state news agency SANA reported "several terrorists" killed in the Sermin region of Idlib and said a bomb under a bridge had killed an army engineer in the Aleppo region.

Videos posted online by activists showed protests in the southern province of Daraa, birthplace of the revolt that monitors say has cost more than 9,100 lives.

UN human rights expert Yakin Erturk, meanwhile, told reporters in New York Friday that at least four Syrian brigadier generals had defected in recent weeks.

In diplomatic efforts to halt the bloodshed, the Security Council on Wednesday adopted a statement urging Assad and his foes to implement "fully and immediately" Annan's peace plan.

The initiative calls for Assad to pull troops and heavy weapons out of protest hubs, a daily two-hour humanitarian ceasefire, access to all areas affected by the fighting and a UN-supervised halt to all clashes.

Annan's spokesman said a team of technical experts had returned to Geneva after "three days of intensive talks with Syrian authorities on urgent steps to implement" the plan.

On Friday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned against any attempt to circumvent UN authority.

"There's a need to eliminate any loopholes allowing (nations) to act in circumvention of the authority of the Security Council and use force without its approval," Medvedev told a European security conference in Moscow.

The Security Council still awaited a formal Syrian response on Wednesday's statement, but government daily Tishrin welcomed it.

Riyadh, Doha, Ankara "and other capitals which are enemies of Syria, and which wanted a military intervention... suffered a defeat on the international stage," it said.

The opposition Syrian National Council poured scorn on the UN statement, saying it would give the regime more time to continue killing its own people.

Harvest of Souls: Cuba's Church Stages Comeback

HAVANA -- When Fidel Castro took power in Cuba, communism gained a foothold in the western hemisphere. The United States responded with an embargo, effectively cutting off the island nation from American goods and services.

In the 50 years since, more than a million Cuban citizens have escaped the repression brought on by what is known here as "The Revolution."

Today, the average Cuban still can't change jobs without government permission. Even an unauthorized Internet connection could land you in jail. The government owns most businesses, and the average citizen makes only about $15 per month.

Church Stages a Comeback

But there is one area where there have been some changes recently: religious freedom - kind of surprising for a socialist country.

"What we had in Cuba was a very hard time for the Church, almost 30 years that we suffered discrimination for the gospel of Jesus Christ," Pastor Victor Gonzales, director of the Cuban Baptist Convention, told CBN News.

But things have changed dramatically in the last few years, and the Church is staging a comeback.

"I think that the Cuban government believes that the gospel is good for the nation of Cuba," Victor Gonzales said.

"And for that reason they are asking the Church in Cuba to help the Cuban government to bring back again the great value of the Cuban family," he said.

In the past, being a Christian here all but guaranteed a very hard life. Persecution was the rule, with Church leaders routinely imprisoned or driven out of the country.

Those attitudes started to change when Raul Castro, the former dictator's brother, was elected in 2009. He promised to move the country away from some of the old communist policies, especially toward religion.

"In three years, we went from 12 prayer groups and now we have 103 prayer groups in this area," Annette Gonzales, with the Open Bible Church of Havana, said.

"We saw in times past many rigid things that we thought would never be broken," Julio Gonzales, pastor of the Open Bible Church of Havana, told CBN News. "But now we are seeing a great harvest of souls in Cuba."

Religion in School

The Church is also making inroads in the public schools, where they have been given permission to teach children the basics of moral principle - something unheard of even in America today.

Some locals attribute this to economic reasons. The government sees the Church as a cheaper way to carry out social programs.

But one group of Christians told CBN News they believe there are deeper reasons.

"The people love us because we are bringing a message of love, of peace, of healing," one Christian said.

"We've gone around to various places bringing food and clothing to those in need," another Christian said. "The authorities are very happy with what we're doing here, and over 100 children have received Christ through what we've done so far."

These developments have led to a new challenge.

"We need Bibles," one Cuban believer said. "And we need help with our budget to complete the work that is being done here."

"I think that the main thing is pray for us," Annette Gonzales told CBN News. "And you can help with Bibles because sometimes the Church grows up very fast and we have not enough material, enough tools."

Meanwhile, the Christians in Cuba are doing their best to take advantage of their newfound freedoms and spread the gospel to the entire country.

It's already chewed up some big names on the retail scene, but the game-downloading trend shows no sign of being sated. Fresh figures from market research firm NPD show that American digital game sales (including rentals and DLC) amounted to $2.04 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011, which represents a nine percent year-on-year hike at a time when physical game transactions fell three percent. Things are going the same way across the Atlantic, with the UK, France and Germany adding a further $1.29 billion to the burgeoning click-to-buy market. Industry types will surely welcome the news, since digital titles rake in higher margins (hello, PS Store) and reduce the trade in used discs, but what about those of us who'll one day want to swap our dusty copy of Fight Night Round Four for something more subtle?

Permoveh personal vehicle prototype can travel sideways, diagonally (video)

We've seen all sorts of great ideas to assist with personal mobility, and we think this prototype is up there with the rest of them. The Permoveh (from Personal Mobile Vehicle) was developed by Komori Masaharu, an associate professor from Kyoto University. Using a clever wheel-in-wheel system, the buggy can travel diagonally and laterally, with no need for turning space. The idea allows wheelchair users access to places that otherwise might have been too difficult with existing vehicles. Sadly we don't know whether we'll see this in production any time soon, but if you head on over the break, you'll see its creator showing off its moves.
